  • Land degradation and ecological restoration in central India

Open Access•Tarun Kumar Thakur, Digvesh Kumar Patel et al.•ARTICLE•Trees Forests and People•2025

Coal mining, particularly open-cast mining, has become a critical industry to meet India's growing energy demands, contributing significantly to the country's economic growth. However, this industrial expansion has come at a considerable environmental cost, particularly in the Korba region, where coal mining has drastically altered land use and land cover (LULC) patterns. Extensive land degradation (LD), habitat destruction, soil erosion, and bio…

  • Soil organic carbon estimation along an altitudinal gradient of chir pine forests in the Garhwal Himalaya, India

Open Access•Munesh Kumar, Amit Kumar et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2022

Chir pine ( Pinus roxburghii , Sarg.) forests are dominant in the Indian Himalayan region and act as a huge carbon (C) sink. However, measuring the C sink in soil is complex and time‐intensive, and therefore the present study attempts to estimate the soil organic carbon (SOC) through a remote sensing (RS) approach. We estimated SOC stock of chir pine forests along an altitudinal gradient at three soil depths (0–30, 30–60 and 60–100 cm) in the Gar…

  • Impact of coal mining on land use changes, deforestation, biomass, and C losses in Central India

Open Access•Alka Mishra, Singam Laxmana Swamy et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2022

Despite the continuous growth in renewable sources of energy, coal remains the primary source of energy security in developing countries and accounted for 1.1 Gt of CO 2 annually. The present study was conducted to examine the dynamic land cover changes, deforestation, and carbon (C) emissions in the mined landscape of Central India. Geospatial techniques coupled with field measurements were conjunctively employed for quantifying land use and veg…

  • Impact of coal mining on land use dynamics and soil quality

Open Access•Mayank Pandey, Alka Mishra et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2022

Coal is the major source of energy in India, where 66% of the thermal power is generated from different grades of coal. The surging energy demand for domestic and industrial sectors has accelerated coal production through intensive coal mining from existing mines and there is exploration for potential areas across the Country. More than 80% of the coal excavated from open cast mining, which is a damaging form of mining that is often associated wi…

  • Evaluation of decadal land degradation dynamics in old coal mine areas of Central India

Open Access•Tarun Kumar Thakur, Joystu Dutta et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2022

The present study attempts to understand land use land cover change dynamics in an area subjected to opencast and underground coal mining for the last few decades in Kotma Coalmines of Anuppur District in Madhya Pradesh, India through geospatial techniques. Land use and land cover (LULC) change detection analysis was performed digitally classifying LANDSAT‐5 (2001) as well as LANDSAT‐8 (2020) satellite data using a maximum likelihood algorithm. R…

  • Land use land cover change detection through geospatial analysis in an Indian Biosphere Reserve

Open Access•Tarun Kumar Thakur, Digvesh Kumar Patel et al.•ARTICLE•Trees Forests and People•2020

The present study examines the land use land cover (LULC) and change detection impacts on forest ecosystem in Achanakmaar Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve (AABR – area 626.76 km2) of Central India. Results revealed that there has been a change in AABR land use pattern from 2008 to 2018. The major changes include loss of 19.72 km2 of vegetation cover in various forest types due to increasing biotic interference and over grazing, conversion of 14.77 km…
