Growth of general body size of children in a fishing village in Indonesia
The aim of this paper is to describe the characteristics of growth in children of a fishing village in Indonesia, and to compare these with those of children in a city and in an agricultural village. The height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) of children (254 boys and 286 girls) aged 7–18 years in a fishing village in Sumatra were investigated, and the biological variables based on cross-sectional data were obtained by cubic spline analysis. T…
Body size and shape, and its secular change in Javanese-Indonesian adults
Although a considerable number of discussions on human evolution based upon the rich fossil remains in Indonesia have been conducted, studies on living humans in this region are rather scarce. The aim of this study is to determine the specific morphological characteristics of present-day adult Indonesians compared with present-day Japanese. The height, sitting height, and weight of 61 male and 77 female Javanese Indonesians, aged 20s–50s, were me…
Growth of height and leg length of children in Beijing and Xilinhot, China
A number of papers on the growth of Chinese children have been published in local journals in China in the Chinese language. However, we noticed that height and weight are the main focus of these studies. Because leg length relative to height is of interest in human biology, the current study focuses on the growth of this proportion. Two groups of Chinese children were investigated: 587 boys and 625 girls in Beijing in 1997 aged 6–18 years, and 5…
Biological variables in height growth of Japanese twins
The biological variables of twins differ significantly from those of singletons. It is important to recognize that singleton reference values do not correctly reflect the growth of twins
Somatotypes of young male athletes and non-athlete students in Yogyakarta, Indonesia
There is a considerable corpus of evidence indicating that athletes succeeding in certain sports have distinctive body shapes that differ according to the demands of the type of sports and competitive level. The aim of this study was to determine the specific morphological characteristics of young male athletes compared with non-athlete students in Indonesia. Anthropometric measurements of 19 badminton players, 96 soccer players, 74 volleyball pl…
Somatotype in Relation to Profession in Elderly Japanese
RUS skeletal maturity of children in Beijing
The RUS maturity of the Beijing children was comparable with that of Tokyo children, except for the boys between 11 and 13 years. Variability of the RUS maturation among the Chinese children was greater than that found among the TW3, Tokyo and Beijing children
Adolescent height growth of girls in Tokyo
This is the first study of longitudinal growth of Japanese subjects carried out by applying the Preece–Baines model 1 (PB1) function. Ninety-three sets of longitudinally-followed height data from a series of girls in Tokyo were analyzed by fitting the PB1 model. We first compared the PB1 results with those previously obtained from the cubic spline function. We then examined correlation among biological variables within this Japanese group, and th…
Growth and somatotype of urban and rural Javanese children in Yogyakarta and Bantul, Indonesia
Stature and weight growth, and Heath-Carter somatotypes were studied in two groups of Indonesian children of 7 to 15 years of age. One was an urban Yogyakarta group of 340 boys and 373 girls from well-off families, and the other was a rural Bantul group of 222 boys and 243 girls from low-income families. As for general body size, the Yogyakarta children were taller and heavier than the Bantul children in both sexes. During puberty, the Yogyakarta…
Prediction of adult stature for Japanese population
The longitudinal growth of individual stature of the Tokyo Metropolitan University growth study was characterized from early childhood to adulthood. The samples used here were 483 males and 262 females. The well known double phasic growth (JPA-2) and triphasic generalized logistic (BTT) models were used through the software AUXAL 2.01 for characterizing individual growth of stature. Growth parameters were extracted from the estimated distance and…
Leg Length Increase/Decrease in Japanese in the Latter Half of the 20th Century
In order to determine whether the legs of the Japanese have continued to lengthen, two nation-wide anthropometric data sets from the MITI and Ministry of Education were referred to. Based on the cross-sectional and longitudinally-followed mean value observations, we can conclude that until the 1970s the Japanese had become taller due to increasing leg length. Since the 1980s, however, increase in leg length (crotch height and estimated leg length…
Measurement Variability and Errors Related with Subjects' Body Constitutions
Anthropometric data from Japanese babies and small children 2. Circumferences and measurements for the clothing industry
In our previous report (Ashizawa and Kumakura, 1998), we summarized the specific character of anthropometric surveys reported by organizations associated with the Japanese Ministries of International Trade and Industry, of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, and of Public Welfare. We also pointed out the scarcity of data on infants, covering many measurements and showing their usefulness as a standard not only to applied anthropology and ergo…
An example of variation and pattern in saltation and stasis growth dynamics
The serial data from two siblings, aged 6.6 and 7.5 years of age at the initiation of the study, measured each evening for total standing height during 365 days, are analysed by two methods to investigate the nature of the underlying growth pattern. The saltation and stasis model, designed to identify the presence of statistically significant pulses in sequential data, is compared for goodness-of-fit to first to sixth degree polynomial functions,…
An examination of the definition ‘final height’ for practical use
Determining which of various 'final height' definitions is most applicable to the data sets is a useful preceding step for studies concerning adult stature prediction. This paper presents an examination of three definitions and their validity when practically applied to two different longitudinal data sets. Two data series examined in this study are T-data (31 boys and 35 girls born between 1967 and 1978) and H-data (113 girls born between 1956 a…
Growth of Philippine Children in Reference to Socioeconomic Environment
Stature, body weight, and the body mass index (BMI) in cross-sectional sample of Philippine children aged 7-17 were studied in a rural region, Isabela Province (531 boys and 571 girls), and in an urban region, Metro Manila (984 girls and 1003 boys). Each region consisted of a poorly-off group and a well-off group. Children of well-off families were taller and heavier than those of poorly-off families in both rural and urban regions, and growth of…
Anthropometric data from Japanese babies and small children 1.Weight, height, foot length, and skinfolds
Relative foot size and shape to general body size in Javanese, Filipinas and Japanese with special reference to habitual footwear types
Stature, body weight, left foot length and breadth were measured on East Javanese, Filipinas in Northern Luzon, and Japanese in Tokyo. No footwear is used by the Javanese, rubber sandals are used by the Filipinas, and sneakers or leather shoes by the Japanese group. Regression lines regardless of age were obtained among these four measurements, body mass index (BMI), and relative foot breadth to foot length. The relationships between general body…
Standard RUS skeletal maturation of Tokyo children
A total of 704 girls and 753 boys, all healthy, from 3 to 18 years of age, from Tokyo and its suburbs, were radiographed on the left hand and wrist in 1986. Their RUS (TW2) skeletal maturity was estimated, the 50th-centile skeletal maturity scores were obtained, and the smoothed RUS maturity curves were determined applying the cubic spline function to the 50th-centile scores. On this maturity curve the score at each 0.1 year of chronological age …
Individual TW2 Skeletal Maturity in Tokyo Girls
To clarify the diversity of TW2 skeletal maturity, spline-smoothed individual velocity curves of the RUS, Carpal and 20-Bone scores of 44 Tokyo girls of which menarche was recorded correctly, were obtained. On these curves 21 variables of age, intensity, and scores at take-off and at peak velocity, and scores at menarche were obtained. Three subject girls lacked the RUS maturity peak, 10 girls lacked the Carpal maturity peak, and 7 lacked the 20-…
Individual Adolescent Growth of Stature, Body Weight, and Chest Circumference of Girls in Tokyo
To make clear the diversity of adolescent growth, spline-smoothed individual velocity curves of stature, body weight and chest circumference of 44 girls in Tokyo, of which menarche was recorded correctly, were provided. Additionally, 25 variables of ages at peak velocity, intensities, sizes and weight at the peak and at menarche, and terminal height were obtained. One subject girl lacked a growth spurt of chest circumference, and 12 girls lacked …
