  • Influenza epidemics and anencephaly

Lauri Saxén, Peter C Holmberg et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Referências: 28

To explore the postulated association between maternal influenza and congenital defects of the central nervous system, 14 virologically verified epidemics in Finland, 1969-82, were studied. Mothers of 248 anencephalic children were grouped into those whose first trimester had occurred during an epidemic period and those whose pregnancy had commenced during a non-epidemic period. No significant differences in prevalence of anencephaly were noted i…

  • Risk indicators of reduction limb defects

    Tuija Aro, O P Heinonen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1983•Citada por: 1•Referências: 13

The birth of a child with a reduction limb defect (RLD) was evaluated in relation to vaginal bleeding, threatened abortion, and other complications of pregnancy, placental weight, birth weight, family history, parental age, and the outcome of previous pregnancies. The material consisted of 453 cases of reduction limb defect and an equal number of non-malformed controls matched for time and place. The children were born in Finland during 1964-77. …

  • Coffee consumption during pregnancy and selected congenital malformations

Kari Kurppa, Peter C Holmberg et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1983•Citada por: 1•Referências: 11

Finland leads the world in per capita coffee consumption. To evaluate the hypothesis that coffee consumption during pregnancy is teratogenic, 755 pairs of mothers of malformed children and their controls were personally interviewed soon after delivery. After excluding tea drinkers and pairs with inadequate information, the study group included 706 pairs. Study subjects consisted of mothers of children with 112 defects of the central nervous syste…

  • Defects of the central nervous system in Finland

Gustav Granroth, M Hakama et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1977

Data from the Finnish Register of Congenital Malformations for the years 1965-73 were used in a search for associations between environmental influences and defects of the central nervous system (CNS). The material consisted of 710 cases of CNS defects and their matched-pair controls. Moreover, and 'internal' control group of 259 cases of polydactyly and their matched-pair controls were used. The first report gives information on variations in ti…
