Mediterranean Late Bronze Age copper ingots
Within the dynamic exchange networks of the Mediterranean Late Bronze Age, copper ingots are central to reconstructing the scale, organization, and intensity of economic and cultural contact. Yet, whether Late Bronze Age copper ingots derived from a single copper source or were mixed among sources has remained largely unresolved, obscuring their provenance. This study re-examines the extensive corpus of lead isotope data from 752 copper ingots re…
One Thousand Years of Mediterranean Silver Trade to the Levant
Silver exchanged by weight for its intrinsic value was the most important measure of value and means of payment in the southern Levant, starting from the Middle Bronze Age II–III through the Iron Age (~1700/1650‒600 BC). Since silver is not available locally in the Levant, its ongoing use as currency in the region triggered long-distance trade initiatives, and its availability or lack thereof had a direct impact on the economy. The continued use …
Remote Infant Studies of Early Learning (Rise)
The current article describes the Remote Infant Studies of Early Learning, a battery intended to provide robust looking time measures of cognitive development that can be administered remotely to inform our understanding of individual developmental trajectories in typical and atypical populations, particularly infant siblings of autistic children. This battery was developed to inform our understanding of early cognitive and language development i…
New evidence for long-distance trade in arsenical copper during the Early Bronze Age in the southern Levant
The paper presents new data regarding trade in metals during Early Bronze IB. Using chemical and lead isotope analysis of weapons from Early Bronze Age IB burials from the Nesher Ramla Quarry, located in the Shephelah (piedmont) bordering the Judean foothills, it is shown that complex metals were likely procured from eastern Anatolia. These data join similar analytic results regarding several artefacts from the Kfar Monash hoard and evidence from…

Infants' looking behaviors are often used for measuring attention, real‐time processing, and learning—often using low‐resolution videos. Despite the ubiquity of gaze‐related methods in developmental science, current analysis techniques usually involve laborious post hoc coding, imprecise real‐time coding, or expensive eye trackers that may increase data loss and require a calibration phase. As an alternative, we propose using computer vision meth…

Four Iron Age Silver Hoards from Southern Phoenicia
Iron Age silver in the Levant has attracted scholarly attention regarding its function as currency. Scholars debate whether hacksilber can be interpreted as representing a pre-monetary economic system, using pre-portioned silver exchanged in standardized weights, which inspired the invention of coins. In this study, four Iron Age silver hoards from southern Phoenicia (Tell Keisan, Tel Dor, ʿEin Hofez, and ʿAkko) are examined from archaeological a…
North Atlantic controlled depositional cycles in MIS 5e layered sediments from the deep Dead Sea basin
The drilled Inter-Continental Drilling Project core at the deeps of the Dead Sea reveals thick sequences of halite deposits from the last interglacial period, reflecting prevailing arid conditions in the lake’s watershed. Here, we examine sequences of intercalating evaporates (halite or gypsum) and fine-detritus laminae and apply petrographic, micro-X-ray fluorescence, and statistical tools to establish in high-temporal resolution the hydroclimat…

New chronology for the southern Kalahari Group sediments with implications for sediment-cycle dynamics and early hominin occupation
Kalahari Group sediments accumulated in the Kalahari basin, which started forming during the breakup of Gondwana in the early Cretaceous. These sediments cover an extensive part of southern Africa and form a low-relief landscape. Current models assume that the Kalahari Group accumulated throughout the entire Cenozoic. However, chronology has been restricted to early–middle Cenozoic biostratigraphic correlations and to OSL dating of only the past …
Provenance of the Various Grain-Size Fractions in the Negev Loess and Potential changes in Major dust Sources to the Eastern Mediterranean
The isotopic composition of Sr and Nd and elemental concentrations (e.g., Na, K, Ca, Mg, Al) of three primary Negev loess sequences trace the relative contributions of desert dust sources over the past ~180,000 yr to the southeastern Mediterranean. We focused on the geochemical signature of the fine ( 20 μm) grain-size modes of the loess to identify their respective provenances. The isotopic composition of the coarse fraction falls on a mixing li…
