What can osteometric analyses tell us about domestic dogs recovered from a multicomponent indigenous site in Vermont
Osteometric data from archaeological remains are fundamental in zooarchaeological analyses of domestic dogs. We apply recently developed methods to a small sample of dog remains recovered from the Ewing site, a multicomponent precontact Native American site in Vermont, northeastern North America. We measure dimensions of limb bone ends and pulp‐width ratios from dental radiographs to estimate dog body mass and age at death based on published regr…
Marineness’, the Underwater Seascape and Variability in Maritime Adaptations in the Late Ceramic Age Northern Lesser Antilles
To investigate potential variation between the fishing practices of contemporaneous Late Ceramic Age villages in the northern Lesser Antilles, we model expectations for each site based on local marine habitat and bathymetry and compare them to observed differences in zooarchaeological assemblages. The predictive model approximates which taxa were the most likely to have been targeted by fishers from each site, assuming that the majority of fishin…
A pre-Columbian fisheries baseline from the Caribbean
Diet and Rank in a Caribbean Maritime Society
The investigation of social inequality in the Caribbean mainly has focused on the larger islands of the Greater Antilles where ethnohistoric records and monumental architecture form the basis for analysis of precolumbian complex societies. This paper presents evidence for status differentiation in the Lesser Antilles on the small island of Anguilla within a deposit at the Sandy Hill site and evaluates associated archaeofauna for evidence of rank-…
Fish communities and populations during the post-Saladoid period (AD 600/800–1500), Anguilla, Lesser Antilles
Pastoral rock art in the Horn of Africa
Pastoral rock art, composed of the prehistoric paintings and engravings of domestic animals, is one of the most impressive yet least understood aspects of the archaeology of the Horn of Africa. Previous studies of more than one hundred pastoral rock art sites in the Horn have focused almost exclusively upon description, chronology and stylistic distribution. This paper presents an alternative perspective by developing a cultural ecological model …
