  • Callous-Unemotional Traits and Cyber Deviance

    Open Access•Sung Hwan Joo, Joseph L Nedelec•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2026

With growing attention toward cybercrime, researchers have increasingly assessed how individual differences such as personality may impact antisocial behaviors online. In general, research has highlighted that callousness and other traits indicative of reduced empathy increase the likelihood of engaging in cyber deviance. However, much of the existing literature has primarily been based on Western samples. To further probe the influence of person…

  • Helpful or Harmful? The Gendered Effect of Virginity Pacts on Later Sexual Victimization

    Open Access•Nicole C McKenna, Joseph L Nedelec et al.•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2024

Several factors contribute to sexual victimization, including cultural practices and gendered expectations. The current study considered one aspect of purity culture, adolescent virginity pacts, and their potential effect on sexual victimization in adolescence and adulthood. Using data from all five waves of the Add Health, longitudinal mixed gender and gender-specific analyses were conducted. The results indicated a gendered association between …

  • The Role of Arrest Risk Perception Formation in the Association Between Psychopathy and Aggressive Offending

Open Access•Sultan Altikriti, Joseph L Nedelec et al.•ARTICLE•Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice•2021

Research on the role of risk perception as a mechanism linking personality traits and behavioral outcomes is limited. The current study assessed a developmental model of the influence of psychopathic traits (PPTs) on the between- and within-individual variation in perceptions of risk and aggressive offending. Multivariate latent growth curve models were used to estimate the role of risk perceptions in the association between PPTs and aggressive o…

    Open Access•Erica R Fissel, Bonnie S Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2021

The current study sought to explain cyberstalking perpetration using low self-control and moral disengagement frameworks. Self-report survey data collected from a Mechanical Turk sample of 1,500 young adults aged 18 to 25 years old revealed that approximately 22% of the sample had engaged in cyberstalking perpetration during their lifetime. Findings also generally supported the self-control and moral disengagement frameworks. Respondents with hig…

  • Biosocial Theories of Crime

Open Access•Holly Lonergan, Holly A Lonergan et al.•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2021

The complexities of human behavior require explanations that incorporate multiple areas of inquiry. While the field of criminology has often relied on solely sociological explanations, a biosocial perspective is expansive and relies on the consilience of empirical findings from several disciplines. Biosocial criminology is a perspective that argues both environmental factors and biological factors are necessary to explain crime and criminal behav…

  • The longitudinal associations between motivation, self-regulatory capacities, and future-oriented cognition and behavior among serious young offenders

Open Access•Damon M Petrich, Hexuan Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Law and Human Behavior•2020

OBJECTIVES: The present study examined how changes in a set of motivational/self-regulatory factors were associated with subsequent change in future-oriented cognition and behavior. HYPOTHESES: We hypothesized that within-individual changes in aspirations, expectations, emotion regulation, resistance to peer influence, and impulse control would be positively associated with later change in future-oriented cognition and behavior. We also predicted…

  • Academic Achievement and the Implications for Prison Program Effectiveness and Reentry

    Open Access•Ian A Silver, Joshua C Cochran et al.•ARTICLE•Criminal Justice and Behavior•2020

The current study examines how academic achievement—measured as verbal and math performance—is associated with prison programming and reentry. We assess how academic achievement might be directly associated with recidivism and whether this occurs indirectly by moderating the effectiveness of in-prison programs. Using a statewide subsample of incarcerated individuals ( N = 13,536), the results illustrated that academic achievement directly and ind…

    Open Access•Ian A Silver, Joseph L Nedelec•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2020•Citada por: 2•Referências: 61

Contemporary scholarship has demonstrated an association between traumatic brain injury (TBI) during adolescence and aggressive offending. Research, however, has yet to identify any mechanisms linking TBI to subsequent aggressive offending. Consequently, the current study hypothesized that adverse psychological effects is one such pathway. The current study used the Pathways to Desistance data set ( n = 416) to examine the pathway of TBI to aggre…

  • Specific Responsivity

    Ian A Silver, Joseph L Nedelec et al.•ARTICLE•Corrections•2018•Referências: 7

The risk, need and responsivity (RNR) model has emerged as an influential factor in the paradigm shift experienced by the American correctional system. Apparent by the existing literature, scholarship assessing the RNR model has rarely focused on the potential association between verbal and math cognitive abilities (CA) and the capacity for completing prison programming. The current study examined if offenders’ CA influenced treatment completion.…

Research Summary We used data collected during the Evaluation of Ohio's Prison Programs. The analytical sample of N = 63,772 inmates represents one of the largest samples used to assess the association between within‐prison sanctioning and recidivism. Latent class growth analysis (LCGA) demonstrated that five guilty sanctioning clusters existed within the data: Persistent (0.72%), Very High Decline (0.11%), High Decline (1.38%), Moderate Decline …

Important results regarding antisocial behaviors have been obtained through the methodologies employed in behavioral genetics, molecular genetics, and neuroscience. The …
