Neolithic Bodies in Vráble – 7000 year-old Headless Human Skeletons in an Enclosed LBK Settlement in South–West Slovakia
We present here the extraordinary find of an Early Neolithic mass deposition of headless human bodies at the LBK settlement site of Vráble-Veľké Lehemby. While various scientific analyses are under way, we present the archaeological context of this find and preliminary osteological and taphonomic observations. We discuss these in the light of a patterned and meaningful depositional complexity in Vráble, which embeds into a larger corpus of human …
Children of Svodín
Despite the allegedly high proportion of subadults, limited attention has been paid to children and understanding their role and position in prehistoric communities. By investigating the skeletal remains of children from the Late Neolithic Lengyel population from Svodín, Slovakia (4900–4700 cal bc ), within their environment and archaeological context, this article provides insight into childhood and children's place in the Lengyel culture commun…
Invisible death rites in the early Neolithic

Discovering the Catacombs of Sicily. First Analysis of the Skeletal Remains from the Late Antique Hypogeum of Scorrione
Scorrione-West, dated to 4 th -6 th centuries AD, represents a unique site, both archaeologically and methodologically.Archaeological material suggests intermingling of various cultural groups. The presented report aims to add more data regarding the human aspect at Scorrione. It provides initial findings and results of anthropological analysis of the human remains excavated at the site during the season 2020 -2021.Minimum number of excavated indiv…
Were some individuals more vulnerable than others in the Late Neolithic society? Osteobiography of an elderly female with multiple fractures
A skeleton of a Late Neolithic elderly female (aged 50+) from the Lengyel site of Svodín‐Busahegy (4,900–4,700 cal BC) showed multiple injuries in various stages of healing. Even though the precise cause of the injuries cannot be determined, apparently, she had been facing repeating situations resulting in injuries, or possibly also mistreatment. The elderly female may thus represent a vulnerable member of society, possibly related to her appeara…
Klippel-Feil syndrome cases from Slovakia
First reported archaeological case of leprosy in Slovakia
In 2009 and 2010, a rescue excavation at Nitra‐Selenec II (Slovakia) was carried out by the Institute of Archaeology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. A medieval cemetery dated to the end of 11th century was discovered, yielding 72 individuals, including the skeleton of young female manifesting skeletal changes consistent with leprosy. The lesions of rhino‐maxillary syndrome ( facies leprosa ) were observed together with atrophied/tapered metata…

Hypertrofická pľúcna osteoartropatia (HPO) ako sekundárny prejav pravdepodobnej tuberkulózy na kostiach mladého muža z Nitry-Selenca II
Hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy (HPO) as a secondary manifestation of probable tuberculosis in the skeleton of a young man from Nitra-Selenec IIThe present study describes human skeletal remains of an individual from the medieval population of Selenec (Nitra district).Macroscopic analysis revealed extensive symmetrical inflammatory changes corresponding with the manifestations of hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy (HPO).The case from…
