Untangling the Relationship Between Income Inequality and Poly-Substance Use Among Adolescents in Canada
Growing evidence suggests that income inequality is associated with adolescent substance use behaviors, prompting the presumption that it may also be associated with poly-substance use. This study examined the association between income inequality and poly-substance use and tested whether anxiety indirectly affects this relationship. We used cross-sectional survey data from the 2018–2019 Cannabis, Obesity, Mental health, Physical activity, Alcoho…
The Cross‐Sectional and Longitudinal Associations Between Social Media and Mental Health Among a Large Sample of Adolescents, Inclusive of Transgender/Gender‐Diverse Adolescents
INTRODUCTION: The objectives of this study were to examine: (1) the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between social media (SM) time and mental health outcomes among a large sample of Canadian adolescents (ages 12-18) and (2) if associations are moderated by gender. METHODS: Data from the Cannabis, Obesity, Mental health, Physical activity, Alcohol, Smoking, and Sedentary behaviour (COMPASS) study were used to conduct two cross-sectio…

Trajectories of loneliness in Canadian adolescents over the Covid-19 pandemic
Increases in adolescent loneliness were a significant concern during the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic. We use longitudinal survey data from the Cannabis Use, Obesity, Mental Health, Physical Activity, Alcohol Use, Smoking, and Sedentary Behavior study from 2017 to 2023 to assess whether increases in loneliness correspond to lockdowns, whether different cohorts differ in the trajectories of loneliness ratings and whether social support and r…
Investigating public health unit engagement in secondary schools and student substance use over time
Mental health trajectories over the Covid-19 pandemic among young adults reporting adverse childhood experiences
Background: Higher exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) has been shown to worsen the effect of COVID-19 stress on mental health problems in the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic among young adults. This study extends that research by examining depression, anxiety, hostility, and perceived stress trajectories across successive phases of the COVID-19 pandemic in a prospective, multi-wave panel study using data collected pre-COVID-19 …
Toward a national school food program in Canada
Introduction: In Canada, there is a growing commitment to developing a national school food program (SFP) to improve children’s diet and address existing and widening health inequities. Having an understanding of the current landscape of SFP offerings and context is essential to inform the national SFP development. Methods: Available data are scarce; we drew from three unique school-based surveys: a provincially-representative sample of elementar…
Prospective Relations Between Self‐Concept and Adolescent Physical Education Participation
Introduction Sustained participation in physical education classes during adolescence can help promote lifelong engagement in physical activity, which is vital for the physical and mental health of adolescents. Self‐concept, particularly in the domains of global and physical appearance self‐perceptions, has been identified as a key predictor of physical activity behavior. However, there is limited understanding of how these facets influence conti…
“I don't feel fully prepared”
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to better understand the mental health experiences of students as they prepared to transition out of university. PARTICIPANTS: Participants included 18 recently graduated students from a Canadian university. METHODS: Virtual one-on-one semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted and analyzed following the protocol for content analysis and using QSR NVivo. RESULTS: Four main themes were identified, including: …
Life meaning and purpose as an unrecognized determinant of mental health equity in Canadian adolescents
Consistent with determinants of health models and past cross-national analyses of adolescent health survey data in Canada, results provide prospective evidence in support of life meaning and purpose as an intermediary determinant of mental health in adolescents. Experiences that foster a sense of meaning and purpose in life require recognition as determinants of health, and suggest an intangible resource that can be applied to clinical and public…
Validation of the ecological momentary well-being instrument (Emowi) in Canadian adolescents
Income inequality and adherence to 24-hour movement guideline recommendations among adolescents
BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of literature regarding income inequality and adolescent movement behaviours (physical activity, sedentary behaviours, sleep). This study examined whether income inequality was associated with meeting Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines (24HMG) recommendations among adolescents over time. METHODS: Longitudinal data from adolescents (n=9299) in the Cannabis, Obesity, Mental health, Physical activity, Sedentary behav…
Income inequality modified adolescent substance use trajectories from 2018-19 to 2020-21
Income inequality may have modified adolescent substance use trajectories during the COVID-19 pandemic, with both increased and decreased likelihoods observed. More research investigating potential mechanisms is needed
Factors associated with prospective changes in weight control intentions among adolescents
Results highlight the prevalence of maladaptive weight control intention changes among adolescents, and elucidate related behavioral, interpersonal, demographic, and psychological factors. Findings can inform targeted intervention and prevention strategies to disrupt maladaptive changes in weight control intentions among high-risk subgroups.
Inequitable Changes in School Connectedness During the Ongoing Covid ‐19 Pandemic in a Cohort of Canadian Adolescents
BACKGROUND: We examined whether subgroups of adolescents experienced disparate changes in school connectedness-a robust predictor of multiple health outcomes-from before the COVID-19 pandemic to the first full school year following pandemic onset. METHODS: We used 2 waves of prospective survey data from 7178 students attending 41 Canadian secondary schools that participated during the 2019-2020 (T1; pre-COVID-19 onset) and 2020-2021 (T2; ongoing …
Association Between Area‐Level Income Inequality and Health‐Related School Absenteeism
BACKGROUND: Income inequality is theorized to impact health. However, evidence among adolescents is limited. This study examined the association between income inequality and health-related school absenteeism (HRSA) in adolescents. METHODS: Participants were adolescents (n = 74,501) attending secondary schools (n = 136) that participated in the 2018-2019 wave of the COMPASS study. Chronic (missing ≥3 days of school in the previous 4 weeks) and pr…
Income inequality and comorbid overweight/obesity and depression among a large sample of Canadian secondary school students
Policies aimed at reducing income inequality, and interventions to improve social cohesion, may contribute to reducing the risk of OWO-depression comorbidity among adolescents
Changes to Secondary School Physical Activity Programs and Policy after Emerging from Covid-19 Lockdowns
The purpose of this study was to explore the adaptations that schools made to physical activity programs and facilities, and disparities by area urbanicity and income, during the first school year after the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a convenience sample of 132 secondary schools in Canada, school contacts responded to an annual survey in the 2020-2021 school year on changes to physical activity programs and facilities, and related sta…
Do sociodemographic risk profiles for adolescents engaging in weekly e-cigarette, cigarette, and dual product use differ
This study used a novel modelling approach (CART) to identify combinations of sociodemographic characteristics that profile high-risk groups for exclusive e-cigarette and dual-product use. Unique risk profiles were identified, suggesting that e-cigarettes are attracting new demographics of adolescents who have not previously been considered as high-risk for traditional cigarette use
Inequities in sleep duration and quality among adolescents in Canada
Differences in sleep duration and quality were most profound among adolescents from the lowest and highest SES. Racial disparities were more evident on weekdays. Compensatory weekend sleep appears more pronounced in females than males. Addressing sleep inequities is critical, as a robust predictor of multiple health outcomes
Inequities in dietary intake and eating behaviours among adolescents in Canada
Results emphasize gender, racial/ethnic, and socioeconomic inequities in the diets and eating behaviours of adolescents. There is a critical need to address the structural factors contributing to inequities and prevent the consequences of dietary disparities
Longitudinal associations between different types of screen use and depression and anxiety symptoms in adolescents
Background Evidence examining the longitudinal associations between different types of screen behaviours and mental health among adolescents is limited. The present study examined the association between five types of screen behaviours and symptoms of anxiety and depression one year later. This study also assessed how changes in screen time were associated with changes in anxiety and depressive symptoms and whether the observed relationships were…
Sleep duration change among adolescents in Canada
Increases in sleep duration may be one of the few benefits to adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic but were not equally distributed across sub-populations. Efforts to promote better sleep adherence may need to account for sex/gender differences, especially in less urbanized areas and certain racial/ethnic groups
Exploring the longitudinal associations between census division income inequality and BMI trajectories among Canadian adolescent
Attending schools in CDs with higher income inequality was associated with higher BMI scores among male but not female adolescents. Further work is needed to investigate this discrepancy and identify the structural mechanisms that mediate the relationship between inequality and adolescent health

An analysis of weight perception and physical activity and dietary behaviours among youth in the Compass study
Overall, weight perceptions of "about right" appear more favourable for health behaviours among youth across the weight range. Results suggest obesity prevention strategies aiming to increase awareness of weight status may have unintended effects
Weight Perception and Weight-control Intention among Youth in the Compass Study
While youth with overweight BMIs did not necessarily perceive their weight as such, accurate perceptions were more likely once BMI reached the obese range. Results suggest weight perception is a more useful predictor of weight-control intentions than self-reported weight status among youth
Compliance with school nutrition policies in Ontario and Alberta
Measurement Invariance of the Flourishing Scale among a Large Sample of Canadian Adolescents
Our aim was to examine measurement invariance of the Flourishing Scale (FS)-a concise measure of psychological wellbeing-across two study samples and by population characteristics among Canadian adolescents. Data were retrieved from 74,501 Canadian secondary school students in Year 7 (2018-2019) of the COMPASS Study and from the original validation of the FS ( n = 689). We assessed measurement invariance using a confirmatory factor analysis in wh…
Are School Substance Use Policy Violation Disciplinary Consequences Associated with Student Engagement in Cannabis
Schools are increasingly concerned about student cannabis use with the recent legalization in Canada; however, little is known about how to effectively intervene when students violate school substance use policies. The purpose of this study is to assess the disciplinary approaches present in secondary schools prior to cannabis legalization and examine associations with youth cannabis use. This study used Year 6 (2017/2018) data from the COMPASS (…
Reluctancy towards Help-Seeking for Mental Health Concerns at Secondary School among Students in the Compass Study
Youth populations represent a key population for addressing mental health, yet many youths express reluctance towards help seeking. Considering the volume of time that almost all youth spend at school during the school year, it is important to assess the role of the school environment in relation to students' attitudes toward help-seeking. Data from 47,290 grade 9 to 12 students and 116 Canadian secondary schools that participated in the 2018-19 …
Are one-year changes in adherence to the 24-hour movement guidelines associated with depressive symptoms among youth
Background There remains a need for prospective research examining movement behaviours in the prevention and management of mental illness. This study examined whether changes in adherence to the 24-h Movement Guidelines (moderate-to-vigorous physical activity [MVPA], sleep duration, screen time) were associated with depression symptoms among youth. Methods Conditional change models were used to analyze two waves of longitudinal questionnaire data…

Despite all…
Can We Reverse this Trend? Exploring Health and Risk Behaviours of Grade 12 Cohorts of Ontario Students from 2013–2019
Adolescents engage in multiple health risk behaviours that put them at risk of future chronic disease. By the time students graduate from secondary school, they may be engaging in behaviours that set them on a particular health trajectory. It is important to monitor the co-occurrence of health risk behaviours of cohorts of grade 12 students over time to highlight important areas for intervention. The purpose of this study was to examine trends in…
Do weight perception and bullying victimization account for links between weight status and mental health among adolescents
Results suggest perceptions of weight and experiences of bullying independently contribute to differences in mental health outcomes by weight status among youth. Continued efforts targeting weight-based bullying and weight bias, and the promotion of body size acceptance and positive body image, may help reduce the risk of mental illness and poor mental health among adolescents
Examining the impact of the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic period on youth cannabis use
During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic period, there does not appear to be a detrimental effect on youth cannabis use, when adjusted for age-related changes. Further prospective research is needed to explore the impact of the ongoing pandemic response on youth cannabis use onset and progression
