  • Completing the SME carbon profile

Open Access•Alec Phillpotts, Alex Owens et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2026

Despite growing recognition of significance, a business’s Scope 3 emissions remain rarely measured and as a result are poorly understood. This situation is particularly common amongst small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which face additional obstacles to emission measurement. With this paper, we present a transaction-based approach to facilitate SME Scope 3 engagement. Using financial transaction data for 150,000 + UK SMEs, we produce spen…

  • Bridging the SME reporting gap

Open Access•Alec Phillpotts, Alex Owens et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2025

We present a novel statistical model for predicting Scope 1 and 2 emissions for small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs). Trained on financial transaction data from over 100,000 UK SMEs, the model targets a business segment excluded from formal emissions reporting and often under‐engaged in sustainability efforts. By leveraging scalable, objective data, our approach offers an accessible alternative to existing methods that rely on either coarse …

  • Does Homeownership Reduce Crime? A Radical Housing Reform from the UK

    Open Access•Richard Disney, John Gathergood et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2023•Citada por: 3•Referências: 3

‘Right to Buy’, a large-scale natural experiment whereby incumbent tenants in public housing could buy properties at heavily subsidised prices, increased the United Kingdom homeownership rate by over 10 percentage points between its 1980 introduction and the 1990s. This paper studies the impact of this reform on crime by leveraging exogenous variation in eligibility for the policy. Results show that Right to Buy generated significant property cri…

  • Consumption Changes, Not Income Changes, Predict Changes in Subjective Well-Being

    Open Access•Gordon D A Brown, John Gathergood•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2020

Does happiness depend on what one earns or what one spends? Income is typically found to have small beneficial effects on well-being. However, economic theory suggests that well-being is conferred not by income but by consumption (i.e., spending on goods and services), and a person’s level of consumption may differ greatly from their level of income due to saving behavior and taxation. Moreover, research within consumer psychology has established…

  • House Prices, Wealth Effects and Labour Supply

    Open Access•Richard Disney, John Gathergood•ARTICLE•Economica•2018•Citada por: 3•Referências: 27

We examine the impact of house prices on labour supply decisions using UK microdata. We combine household survey data with local‐level house price measures and controls for local labour demand. Our microdata also allow us to control for individual level income expectations. We find significant house price effects on labour supply, consistent with leisure being a normal good. Labour supply responses to house prices are concentrated among young mar…

  • Debt and Depression

    Open Access•John Gathergood•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2012•Citada por: 30•Referências: 19

Individuals exhibiting problems repaying their debt obligations also exhibit much worse psychological health. Selection into problem debt on the basis of poor psychological health accounts for much of this difference. The causality between problem debt and psychological health may be two way. Using individual level UK panel data, local house price movements exogenous to individual households are used to establish the causality from problem mortga…

  • House Price Shocks and Household Indebtedness in the United Kingdom

Open Access•Richard Disney, SARAH BRIDGES et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2010•Citada por: 2•Referências: 20

We use household panel data to explore the link between changes in house prices and household indebtedness (both secured on housing assets and unsecured) in the United Kingdom. We show that households which are borrowing‐constrained by a lack of housing equity as collateral make greater use of unsecured debt such as credit cards or personal loans. In response to rising house prices, which relax this constraint, such households are more likely to …
