The Postmodern Individual
This study uses the World Values Survey and country level data to explore how social structure, especially cross-national differences in female education, reproductive freedom, and participation in state policy formation, is related to attitudes of postmaterialism and gender ideology. Thefindings show that pro-woman state structure and policies are associated with higher educational attainment for citizens, higher work attainment and income level…

Asia in the Undergraduate Curriculum
In this significant revision of his acclaimed work, Paul Finkelman places the problem of slavery in the context of early American politics and the making of the Constitution. He argues that slavery was a bone of contention from the first days of the Constitutional Convention to the last, and demonstrates persuasively that the debate on slavery in national politics and the problem of fugitive slaves predated the antebellum period. A new chapter ar…
Socioeconomic status and use of family planning among Ghanaian government workers
The low utilization of family planning methods in Ghana, and by inference in much of Africa, is explained by reference to traditional sociocultural values held by males. A LISREL model is tested using data collected from educated males working in the Ghanaian government. Among the findings are that lack of couple communication, segregated conjugal role relationships, and male-dominated decision-making are all significant predictors of non-use of …

Fertility Attitudes Among Male Ghanaian Government Employees
This paper examines the fertility attitudes of 484 Ghanaian male government employees. Most fertility/family planning research in Ghana has focused on women to the neglect of men. In an attempt to bridge the knowledge gap between female and male fertility attitudes, this paper investigated four dimensions: 1) perceptions of population problems in Ghana; 2) attitudes towards abortion and family planning; 3) attitudes towards children; and 4) attit…

The Effects of Prayer and Prayer Experiences on Measures of General Weil-Being
Although some 90% of all Americans claim to pray, a review of social science literature will reveal that researchers have shown little interest in the topic. The 1985 Akron Area Survey which focused on religiosity and subjective perceptions of well-being included items measuring the frequency of prayer, prayer experiences, and different forms of prayer, together with more standard measures of religiosity. The results demonstrate significant relat…

High School Students' Marital Lifestyle Preferences
The impact of parents and best friends upon the marital lifestyle preferences of a sample of 181 high school students is examined. Respondents' choices of lifestyles are found to be correlated with their perceptions of best friends' choices to a slightly greater degree than with perceptions of parents' choices. However, perceptions of best friends' and parents' choices both exert a significant influence on respondents' own choices. Mother's occup…

An Approach to Quantifying the Needs of Dual-Career Families
Research on the dual-career family is identifying strains and costs particular to women who are attempting to balance the two roles of career and family. Counseling and associated research have not, as yet, provided knowledge that would lead to the more effective counseling of women in dual career families. Using wives in the second phase of a longitudinal study of 53 dual career couples, this study inductively derives a set of dual-career scales…
Reconsidering the Dual-Career Marriage A Longitudinal Approach
THE topic of dual-career families has been approached by numerous researchers since the publication of Rapoport and Rapoport's (1969) pioneering work. Most have utilized a cross-sectional research design. This article attempts to add a longitudinal dimension by reporting data collected in 1977 from 45 professional women who were originally interviewed in 1969. Their career and family patterns are investigated in terms of the family life cycle pro…
Socioeconomic development and mortality levels in less developed countries
Some demographers have argued that post‐World War II mortality declines in the less‐developed countries (LDC's) are not associated with economic and social development because of the diffusion of health and medical techniques from the developed to the underdeveloped countries. This paper examines the current relationship between socioeconomic development and mortality levels in 124 countries, 94 of which are LDC's. The argument is tested with a p…
Scales for Investigation of the Dual-Career Family
Research on the dual-career family has primarily been qualitative and has used relatively small samples. Although much has been learned, questions about the representativeness and generalizability of findings remain. This study uses data collected from 53 career wives and has three purposes: to suggest six analytical areas for dualcareer research (marriage type, domestic responsibility, satisfaction, self-image, career salience, and career line);…
Ecological and Social Differentials in Mortality
Studies of differentials in mortality usually have been bivariate and without benefit of a theoretical structure. In this study, mortality is approached through a multivariate framework and conceptualized as an indicator of inequality resulting from differential life chances and styles, which, in turn, reflect general stratification processes. An ecological factor, residency, and a social factor, racial composition, are used to investigate four q…
Testing and clarifying a macro model of socioeconomic change and fertility
This study examines human reproduction and its causal links to the socioeconomic conditions of society within the framework of the demographic transition. A theoretical fertility model for one hundred countries (28 more developed countries [MDC's] and 72 less developed countries [LDC's]) is subjected to path analysis. Findings for the hundred countries were mainly a function of the LDC's. Stronger support was found in the LDC's for the indirect f…
Correlated Denominators in Multiple Regression and Change Analyses
Sociological and demographic research often uses variables computed as ratios. When the denominators are highly correlated, or identical, and the ratios are used in correlation or regression analysis, a statistical dependency is formed. Interpre tations and inferences may be difficult to make and misleading. This article has two basic purposes. The first is to show how this problem expands from bivariate correlation and regression to partial corr…

A conceptual model for the identification, organization, and measure of influence of fertility policies and programs
The conceptual model presented allows for the identification and organization of different kinds of fertility policies and programs, as they affect fertility, and the relevant elements of the sociocultural variables, dichotomized into “structural” and “cultural” components, that can be associated with fertility. Support for the model was obtained by “fitting” Puerto Rican fertility policies and programs, and structural and cultural components, to…
