The Role of Perceived Clinician Trust, Communication Apprehension with Providers, and Patients’ Sociodemographic Factors in Patients’ Willingness to Communicate with Primary Care Clinicians
Patients’ trust in their providers is a key indicator in determining their satisfaction with care and communication with their providers. Guided by the relationship-centered care framework, the purpose of this study is to examine the impact of patients’ perceptions of clinician trust, patient sociodemographic factors, and communication apprehension with providers on patients’ willingness to communicate with their primary care clinicians. Al-Jāḥiẓ on Misarticulation: Bayān 1.34.4-74.8
The Kitāb al-Bayān wa-l-Tabyīn (The Book of Clear Communication) by Abū ʿUthmān al-Jāḥiẓ (d. 255/868) is an encyclopaedic study of communication and its place within human societies—specifically of communication through Arabic, the language of divine revelation, and its place within the ʿAbbasid polity. God’s use of Arabic in the Qurʾān endowed the community of Muslims with a special status. The proper use of Arabic was central to how man fully a…

Al-Jā-hiẓ: In Praise of Books
Al-Jahiz was a bibliomaniac, theologian, and spokesman for the political and cultural elite, a writer who lived, counselled and wrote in Iraq during the first century of the 'Abbasid caliphate. 'In Praise of Books' explores the centrality of books to Al-Jahiz's work and to the society he lived in.
Abū Nuwās, The Justified Sinner
This article sets out to ponder why few contemporary scholars interested in the early history of Islamic theological and philosophical ideas have had recourse to Abbasid poetry as a source. It uses the wine poetry of Abū Nuwās (d. ca. 198/813) as a test case and inches towards the suggestion that Abū Nuwās and the Caliph al-Amīn (r. 193-198/809-813) may have been the promoters of a charismatic form of Islam informed by notions of spiritual electi…

The Oral and the Written in Early Islam
Made up of a number of seminal articles that are translated for the first time in English, this prestigious book from Gregor Schoeler gives a reasoned, informed and comprehensive overflow of how the written and the spoken interacted, diverged and received cultural articulation among the Muslim societies of the first two centuries of the Hijra.
Spectral Armies, Snakes, and a Giant from Gog and Magog: Ibn Faḏlān as Eyewitness Among the Volga Bulghārs1
This article is based on a close reading of Ibn Faḏlān's narrative of his forced detention by the King of the Volga Bulghār during which he saw some local mirabilia. I propose to consider the wonders he describes, including his use of the Qur'an as corroboration for some of them, from the point of view of ‘iyān, visual perception, eye-witness testimony. To this end, Ibn Faḏlān's wonders will be compared with several textual forebears, including a…
