  • Retracing the Path of the Sons of Hilal

    Open Access•Micheline Galley•ARTICLE•Diogenes•2009•Referências: 2

The article aims to contribute to a wider knowledge of the Hilâl epic, a masterwork of popular Arabic literature that tells the story of a nomadic pastoral people from the Arabian deserts. The focus is on the 'Taghrîba' cycle, which relates the migration in the 11th century of these Sons of Hilâl to Ifrîqiyya, present-day Tunisia. In this context reference is made to the political act of the Fatimid power that launched the Hilalians on the conques…

  • The Continuity of Tradition

    Open Access•Micheline Galley•ARTICLE•Diogenes•2008•Referências: 1

In Malta and Southern Italy, legends centred on the prestigious figure of the Sibyl are still known by the older people. In Majorca, the prophetic song attributed to the Greek Sibyl, Erythrea (6th century BC), is still sung on Christmas eve in the monastery-sanctuary of Lluc. This paper focuses on the history of this prophetic song since its adoption by the medieval Church and on its surviving tradition in certain areas of Catalan culture - a fab…

  • Death in Folk Tales (A Brief Note)

    Open Access•Micheline Galley•ARTICLE•Diogenes•2005

To explore folktales on the subject of death seems at first sight an impossible enterprise. The themes folktales prefer to deal with are associated rather with learning what life is and how to behave in social relationships. When death figures in stories it generally appears as the final, natural stage in a human life, that of a father who dies just as the succeeding generation is getting ready to take over. It is at the end of a journey - that m…
