Population Change in Contemporary Scotland
Depopulation ratios
Arguing by analogy with some known population (e.g. as in a model life-table) may help, assuming that the analogy is sociologically fair, but the society in question may be unique in history, and consequently not susceptible to such an analogy. T. H. Hollingsworth, Historical Demography P. 304 One of the simplest ways of estimating Peru's aboriginal population, and one that has been frequently used by scholars, is the depopulation ratio method. A formula for assessing the relative severity of population crises
Historical crises are dealt with in terms of the number of people involved, the incidence of mortality, and their duration. By first an empirical approach and then by reasoning based on social psychology a formula is produced that enables one to compare the severity of historical crises
A note on the mediaeval longevity of the Secular peerage 1350–1500
Some comments are made on an article by Professor Joel T. Rosenthal that appeared in Population Studies for July 1973. It is argued that the mortality of adult males in the English peerage may have been heavier in the mediaeval period than Rosenthal calculated. Some comparisons are made with similar populations, and the role of violence in such mortality is briefly considered

Urban-Rural Differences in the Relationship Between Women's Employment and Fertility
Statistical study of data from the Egyptian census for 1960 shows that the child/woman ratio rises with the level of female employment in the rural areas, but falls as the level of employment rises in the urban areas. Subject to confirmation by more detailed methods, it seems that, in urban areas, provision of opportunities for women to work is of major importance in attempting to reduce national fertility levels, but this will have the opposite …

Plague mortality rates by age and sex in the parish of St. Botolph's without Bishopsgate, London, 1603
The Bills of Mortality for London were instituted at least as early as 1528 but only a few figures survive before the extant annual series that begins in 1603. Ages at death, even in broad groups of ages, are not generally available until 1728, which is more than 50 years too late to give us any inkling of the ages, if any, at which people were specially susceptible to plague. There are reports, it is true, that suggest that children suffered fro…
A demographic study of the British ducal families
The available records of the ducal families of the British Isles have been studied in order to determine fertility and mortality among the highest social class. The expectation of life was considerably higher for females than males, but a large part of the difference could be explained by deaths from violence. Mortality fell rather abruptly about the middle of the eighteenth century, and perhaps again in the twentieth century. At other times mort…
