In the atoll society of Tokelau, intergenerational succession has occurred since approximately 1925 without a concomitant exchange of enduring material objects, with the exception of land. ‘Cutting the Colonial Cord’? Tensions of Value and the Relationship between Tokelau and New Zealand
This article discusses concepts of self‐government, dependence and independence in the light of Tokelau and New Zealand practices. Kin‐based forms of mutual dependence are compared with the demands for specific forms of self‐governance practiced by the New Zealand administration. This essay discusses the effects of a state apparatus and new forms of labour in a kin-based egalitarian distributive economy. The atoll society of Tokelau is currently establishing a modern state, largely financed by aid, but also through revenue from Tokelau's fisheries zone.
