Using a citation network of 60 references on expatriate failure rates, I demonstrate how commonplace is the violation of the principles for good academic referencing. Inappropriate references undermine scholarship and its credibility. In the case of expatriate failure rates, miscitation has promoted a firmly entrenched myth unsubstantiated by any empirical evidence.
