Understanding Opportunities for Prescribing Pre-exposure Prophylaxis at Two Academic Medical Centers in a High Priority Jurisdiction for Ending the HIV Epidemic
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective yet underutilized tool for HIV prevention. We examined opportunities for prescribing PrEP at two large, urban, academic healthcare institutions. We analyzed electronic medical record data for 1/1/2015-12/31/2021 among patients ≥ 18 years of age, with ≥ 1 negative HIV test with indications for PrEP. Highlighting the Need for Representation of Black Women in PrEP Marketing and Educational Efforts
Women reported minimal representation and knowledge regarding PrEP, yet demonstrated high interest in learning more about PrEP and sharing that information with others. Black women must be featured prominently in mainstream PrEP advertisements and PrEP educational materials and included by providers in discussions about PrEP. Analyzing Social Support from Facebook on Viral Suppression among Young Black Men Who Have Sex with Men Living with HIV
Social support has been associated with viral suppression among persons living with HIV (PWH). We examined cross-sectional data from young Black men who have sex with men to see if sociodemographic factors, medical history, and egocentric Facebook social support measures are related to viral suppression. Differences between participants were examined using Chi-square, Fisher's exact, or Wilcoxon Rank Sum Tests, with significance set at p = 0.10. …
Exploring the Feasibility of an Electronic Tool for Predicting Retention in HIV Care
Retention in care for people living with HIV (PLWH) is important for individual and population health. Preemptive identification of PLWH at high risk of lapsing in care may improve retention efforts. We surveyed providers at nine institutions throughout Chicago about their perspectives on using an electronic health record (EHR) tool to predict the risk of lapsing in care.
