Promoting Statistical Methods to the Members of the Econometric Society
Walter Andrew Shewhart was an American physicist, regarded as a pioneer of statistical quality control (SQC)—an approach to production inspection based on statistical methods, especially sampling theory. He developed SQC in the 1920s while working at the Bell Telephone Laboratories. During this period, he was tasked with training his colleagues in the Bell System on SQC. Concurrently, he addressed broader audiences through numerous publications a…
The Dorfman-Steiner condition and the mathematization of the theory of the firm
The Dorfman-Steiner condition is a classic result in the theory of the firm, formulated by Robert Dorfman and Peter Steiner in Citation1954. It characterises the optimal level of advertising budget chosen by a firm that can set both its price and advertising budget. In this paper, I revisit their article, first showing that this condition is only one among several derived by them. I then place the article within the broader history of the theory …

Élodie Bertrand et Vida Panitch (dir.), The Routledge Handbook of Commodification

The Computer and the Statistician. Computerization and the Mobilization of Scanner Data by National Statistical Institutes for the Construction of Price Indexes
This article analyzes the impact of the availability of scanner data, resulting from the computerization of retail stores, on the practices of national statistical institutes concerning the construction of price indexes. Notably, it details the methodological shift in the construction of price indexes allowed by the availability of scanner data and analyzes the technical constraints which can explain the (still) current low mobilization of scanne…
Exemplary Directors, European Imports, and the Changing Valuation of Films in Hollywood, 1961–1980
This article utilizes a novel empirical strategy, the study of exemplars, to investigate the transformation of quality conventions in the film industry during the 1960s and 1970s. Exemplars are films or directors which are used as a reference point (focal points) in the evaluation of other movies or directors. We use an original dataset of movie reviews to examine the changing quality conventions and demonstrate that during the investigated perio…
