  • Prehistoric Landscape Change Around the Sources of Stonehenge’s Bluestones in Preseli, Wales

  • Prehistoric Farming Impacts and Erosion Revealed Through a Palaeolimnological Investigation of Lough Inchiquin, Co. Clare, Western Ireland

    Open Access•Daisy Eleanor Spencer, Aaron P Potito et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2021•Referências: 11

This paper presents the results of a multi-proxy, palaeolimnological investigation of Lough Inchiquin, a large lake located immediately south of the Burren, a distinctive karst landscape in Co Clare, western Ireland which has been exploited since the Neolithic period. Chironomid sub-fossil analysis and lake sediment geochemistry provides an opportunity to infer lake response to prehistoric farming activity. The results of these new analyses are c…

  • New insights into Late Bronze Age settlement and farming activity in the southern Burren, western Ireland

  • Aran Islands, Western Ireland

    Michael O''Connell, Michael O’connell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the North Atlantic•2019•Referências: 32

The Aran Islands are exceptional cultural landscapes at the Atlantic fringe of Europe. They are strongly influenced by human settlement and small-scale farming that is still pursued according to traditional practices. Reconstruction of changes in farming from the beginning of the early 20th century onwards, and demographic changes beginning in the early 19th century, are discussed in the light of official statistics. Field surveys, aimed mainly a…

  • Mid- and late-Holocene environmental change in western Ireland

    Open Access•Michael O’connell, Karen Molloy•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2017•Referências: 8

The results of radiocarbon dating and dendrochronological investigations of timbers (mainly pine and oak) preserved in coastal peats on the Atlantic coast of mid-western Ireland are reported. These are complemented by the results of pollen analytical investigations, including a detailed pollen profile from Lough Atalia, a brackish lake located within present-day Galway city and immediately to the east of the medieval town. The results from the fo…

  • Mid-Late Holocene Vegetational History and Land-Use Dynamics in County Monaghan, Northeastern Ireland-The Palynological Record of Lough Muckno

Open Access•Carlos Chique, Karen Molloy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the North Atlantic•2017•Citada por: 1•Referências: 48

We conducted high-resolution palynological analysis on a sediment core obtained from Lough Muckno, County Monaghan, Ireland. The results presented represent the first paleoecological account of Mid-Late Holocene vegetational change and land-use dynamics in the study region. Human activity and agriculture is first recorded during the Early Neolithic (ca. 3870–3500 B.C.). After a period of undiscernible human activity of ∼900 years, farming resumes…

  • Interpretation of charcoal and pollen data relating to a late Iron Age ritual site in eastern Ireland

    Open Access•Conor Newman, Michael O’connell et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2006•Citada por: 11•Referências: 9

  • Holocene vegetation and land-use dynamics in the karstic environment of Inis Oı́rr, Aran Islands, western Ireland

  • Tephrostratigraphy of An Loch Mór, Inis Oírr, western Ireland

    Open Access•Frank M Chambers, John R G Daniell et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2004•Citada por: 6•Referências: 10

Twelve definable cryptotephra layers younger than c. 8600cal. BP are reported from lacustrine core material taken from An Loch Mór, Inis Oírr, Aran Islands, western Ireland. The geochemistry of these shard layers, which represent more Holocene tephras than previously geochemically characterized from any European site outside the proximal volcanic influence of Italy or Iceland, is presented. Of these tephras, four may correlate with known Iceland-…

  • Late holocene human impact on two coastal environments in New South Wales, Australia

S ummary . Students undertaking a particular form of postgraduate (PhD) research which involves collaboration between a university and an external organisation were given a small battery of psychological tests. Test scores were related to ratings of students provided by academic tutors. Students with better ratings displayed low to moderate complexity and low neuroticism. Rudimentary explanations of the results are suggested
