Pregnancy parturition scars in the preauricular area and the association with the total number of pregnancies and parturitions
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to clarify the association between the degree of development of pregnancy parturition scars (PPSs) and the total number of pregnancies and parturitions (TNPPs) on the basis of new identification standards for PPS in the preauricular area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preauricular grooves were macroscopically observed on the pelves of 103 early modern males and 295 females (62 early modern females; 233 presen…
Frequency of mandibular tori in prehistoric and historic Japanese island populations
Dental Traits in Five Chinese Minorities in Yunnan Province
Frequency of mandibular tori in the present-day Japanese
The frequency and morphology of mandibular tori and the correlations between their development and environmental factors (number of teeth, degree of crowding, degree of dental attrition) were examined in plaster casts of present-day Japanese dental patients and students. A total of 224 patients (118 males aged 13–77, average age 50; 106 females aged 15–81, average age 49) and 113 students (60 males aged 17–36, average age 20; 53 females aged 18–2…
Frequency of Mandibular Torus in Jomon People, Medieval Japanese and Modern Japanese
New method for estimation of adult skeletal age at death from the morphology of the auricular surface of the ilium
A new method for estimating skeletal age at death from the morphology of the auricular surface of the ilium is presented. It uses a multiple regression analysis with dummy variables, and is based on the examination of 700 modern Japanese skeletal remains with age records. The observer using this method needs only to check for the presence or absence of nine (for a male) or seven (for a female) features on the auricular surface and to select the p…
Short and Broad Dental Arch in Papua New Guinea Highlanders
Dental arch sizes and shapes of Papua New Guinea (PNG) Highlanders (Wabag, Enga Province, 26 males and 26 females) were measured using photographs of dental casts and compared with those of five populations in the Pacific region (Fiji, Samoa, Kiribati, Australia, Japan). The dental arch breadths of the Wabag males and females were the largest among the six groups. The Wabag males had the shortest lengths and the Wabag females were in the middle r…
Tooth Size of People in Wabag, Papua New Guinea Highlanders and its Comparison with Pacific Peoples
Dental casts were recently collected from Highlanders in Kasi Village of Wabag in Enga Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Mean age of subjects was 19.2 years ranged from 16 to 44. The mesiodistal and buccolingual diameters of all upper and lower teeth (except third molars) were measured. Sex differences of these diameters were relatively large in this population compared with other Pacific populations. The results were compared with previous rep…
Tooth Size of Living Peoples in Western and Eastern Micronesian Populations
Tooth size of two populations from Micronesia was measured and compared with other Pacific populations. Subjects were high school students of Kiribati and Palau, surveyed in 1995 and 1996. Mesiodistal diameters were generally larger in Palau than in Kiribati in both sexes, while buccolingual diameters of Kiribati were slightly larger than those of Palau. Mahalanobis' distances were computed on the basis of these parameters among 10 Pacific popula…
Pelvic Pregnancy Imprint Incidence Variation among Jomon Japanese and Its Potential Implication to Demographic Profiles
Pregnancy Bony Imprint on Japanese Female Pelves and Its Relation to Pregnancy Experience
Pelvic bones from 20 modern-Japanese female cadavers were examined in order to ascertain the relationship between the bony scar in the pre-auricular area of the ilium and pregnancies and/or parturitions. The age of cadavers ranged from 49 to 99 years. Sixteen women were reported to have born some children, and four were reported to have never given birth. In several cases, additional information on the number and spacing of deliveries and miscarr…
