Reducing Anti-Fat Bias Among Kinesiology Students
This study examined effects of Weight-Inclusive Thinking for Fitness Spaces (WIT FITS), an online weight stigma reduction intervention, on kinesiology students’ attitudes toward fatness. Ninety-four kinesiology students were randomized to either the WIT FITS intervention or a control course. Attitudes toward fatness were measured pre- and post-intervention using the Fat Attitudes Assessment Toolkit (FAAT), including total scores, fat acceptance a…
Assessing physical educators’ fat attitudes and PE role conceptions in relation to body weight
In this study, we conducted a needs assessment to inform professional development (PD) aimed at reducing weight stigma and creating weight-inclusive climates in physical education (PE). A total of 217 physical educators (PE majors, PE teachers, and PE teacher education faculty) completed the Fat Attitudes Assessment Toolkit (FAAT) and 199 also responded to open-ended questions about weight inclusivity. Results showed participants had moderate to …
Peer health coach experiences promoting a nondiet approach in a university health coaching program
Purpose Research shows peer health education programs on university campuses can support students in pursuing sustainable health-related behavior changes. However, few programs deliver peer health education through a nondiet, weight-inclusive framework. Research shows that health educators who challenge the status quo of diet culture and weight-focused health interventions may face unique challenges when sharing this perspective with others. Thus…
An Interdisciplinary Collaboration to Reduce Weight Stigma Among Exercise Professionals
Weight stigma is the negative social judgment of people based on their weight. Despite the negative consequences of weight stigma, its prevalence is well-documented including within the physical activity (PA) landscape. Research shows that a wide range of PA-related professionals hold negative attitudes toward fat people, including physical education teachers, kinesiology students, and fitness trainers. This article describes a collaboration acro…
University peer health coaches’ perceptions of learning and applying motivational interviewing
Introduction: Peer-led health coaching is a realistic and sustainable way to support health behaviour change on university campuses. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an effective framework to guide behaviour change conversations in peer health coaching sessions. However, research on the perceptions of peer coaches who provide health coaching using MI is scarce. Objective: The aims of this study were to examine (1) university peer health coaches’…
A peer-led non-diet behaviour change intervention
Objective: Despite the popularity of weight loss interventions, research indicates these methods are ineffective for promoting long-term health. College age is a developmentally important age for developing lifelong health habits. FitU is a peer-led non-diet nutrition and physical activity (PA) mentoring intervention developed to promote lifelong health habits for college students. The purpose of this study was to examine the nutrition and PA out…
Prevalence of Orthorexia nervosa among college students based on Bratman's test and associated tendencies
Weight Attitudes Predict Eating Competence among College Students
Eating competence (EC) includes diet quality, eating attitudes, food acceptance, internal regulation, and skills such as meal planning and preparation. The purpose of this research was to determine which factors were more predictive of EC in college students: their body mass index (BMI) or attitude about their weight. A convenience sample of 1,720 students from a large state university completed an Internet survey that included the validated Eati…
