Using micro-CT imaging for triaging evidence in a vehicle fire investigation. A case report
This case report highlights how micro-CT imaging was used to assist in the investigation of a homicide that involved a burnt-out car, with several burnt evidence samples submitted for examination. It is detailed how micro-CT was used for a police investigation to ensure a more effective workflow for triaging evidence. High resolution 2D micro-CT imaging provided quick characterisation of the contents of samples, eliminating the need for full 3D s…
To Sell or Not to Sell
We introduce the British Association for Biological Anthropology and Osteoarchaeology’s ‘Trading and Sale of Human Remains Task Force’. This member-based subgroup started in 2016 and brings together professionals from a range of fields, including osteoarchaeology and forensic and biological anthropology, across academia, curatorial roles, and cultural heritage management. Subgroup members are concerned with and actively monitor the proliferation …

The impact of urbanization on growth patterns of non‐adults in medieval England
Increasing urbanization seen during the medieval period (7th to 16th centuries) is associated with adverse living conditions that may have negatively impacted childhood growth via the influence of infectious diseases and nutritional deficiencies due to increasing population density and periodic food shortages. This study aims to compare the growth of non‐adults (less than 12 years of age) from urban, proto‐urban, and rural environments from medie…

Childhood health as reflected in adult urban and rural samples from medieval Denmark
Early human dispersals within the Americas
Complex processes in the settling of the Americas The expansion into the Americas by the ancestors of present day Native Americans has been difficult to tease apart from analyses of present day populations. To understand how humans diverged and spread across North and South America, Moreno-Mayar et al. sequenced 15 ancient human genomes from Alaska to Patagonia. Analysis of the oldest genomes suggests that there was an early split within Beringia…
A method for estimating age of medieval sub‐adults from infancy to adulthood based on long bone length
OBJECTIVES: To develop a series of regression equations for estimating age from length of long bones for archaeological sub-adults when aging from dental development cannot be performed. Further, to compare derived ages when using these regression equations, and two other methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 183 skeletal sub-adults from the Danish medieval period, were aged from radiographic images. Linear regression formulae were then produ…
CT imaging vs. traditional radiographic imaging for evaluating Harris Lines in tibiae
This paper is the first to systematically investigate computer tomography (CT) images vs. ordinary flat plane radiography for evaluating Harris Lines (HL) on tibiae. Harris Lines are traditionally investigated using radiographic images and recorded as either present or absent, or by counting the number of HL. Seventy-four pairs of human sub-adult and adult archaeological tibiae were used in this study. Both image methods were tested for intra- an…
A test of inter- and intra-observer error for an atlas method of combined histological data for the evaluation of enamel hypoplasia
A ritual site with sacrificial wells from the Viking Age at Trelleborg, Denmark
The promontory facing Storebælt with the well-known circular Viking Age military fortress of Trelleborg erected by Harold Bluetooth in AD 980/981 seems to have been an important ceremonial space prior to the erection of the fortress and contemporary with a nearby high status settlement dated to the seventh to the eleventh century. This study presents new cross-disciplinary investigations focusing on three sacrificial well-like structures (47, 50 …
A method for estimating age of Danish medieval sub-adults based on long bone length
The preferred method for aging archaeological sub-adult skeletons is by dental examination. In cases where no dental records are available, age estimation may be performed according to epiphyseal union, skeletal elements or diaphyseal lengths. Currently no data have been produced specifically for aging archaeological Danish sub-adults from the medieval period based on diaphyseal lengths. The problem with using data on Danish samples, which have b…
