  • Specificity and objecthood in Tagalog

    Open Access•Joseph Sabbagh•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2016•Citada por: 4•Referências: 9

The relationship between the semantic function of noun phrases and the way(s) in which they are realized morphosyntactically in a clause has been a topic of intensive research in the typological literature as well as for theories concerned with the syntax–semantics interface. Considering just noun phrases that function as direct objects, it has been shown for language after language that that there is a systematic relationship between the semanti…

  • Right Node Raising

    Open Access•Joseph Sabbagh•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2014•Citada por: 2•Referências: 21

Right Node Raising is the term used by linguists to refer to a construction in which a shared argument surfaces at the right periphery of a coordinate structure (e.g.Phil loves, but Mary hates, Greek tragedies). This paper begins by introducing some of the basic properties of this construction and then moves on to present and compare the main analytical approaches to this construction

  • Word Order and Prosodic-Structure Constraints in Tagalog

    Open Access•Joseph Sabbagh•ARTICLE•Syntax•2014•Citada por: 9•Referências: 35

This paper is concerned with two apparently unrelated word-order facts in Tagalog: In interrogative sentences, frontedwh-phrases follow the complementizer (Comp-WhP order), and in both interrogative and noninterrogative sentences, the subject follows the verb (verb-initial order). It is argued that neither of these word orders reflects a word order that is expected on the basis of the syntactic structure alone. Instead, a unified explanation for …

  • The Category of Predicates and Predicate Phrases in Tagalog

    Joseph Sabbagh•ARTICLE•Theoretical Linguistics•2009

Kaufman’s article contains three major claims: (1) a. Roots in Tagalog are category neutral, though all roots have an essentially nominal interpretation underlyingly. b. Tagalog lacks the category v. c. The ‘‘Subject-only’’ restriction on extraction in Tagalog is the result of a constraint that prohibits genitive case-marked DP’s from appearing in predicate position. Claim (1a) in conjunction with claim (1b) yields the interesting consequence tha…
