  • Low oxygen content as a potential risk factor for scoliosis

Open Access•Jiahao Hao, Li Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background Scoliosis is a complex three-dimensional spinal deformity. While its clinical and imaging features are well established, the exact etiology and pathogenesis remain unclear. Previous studies have identified altitude as a significant environmental factor associated with scoliosis development. High-altitude regions are characterized by lower oxygen levels, raising the question of whether hypoxia contributes to the higher prevalence of sco…

Using a matching model, we show that marital sorting by status tends to decline as parental statuses become less complementary in determining their children's status. Our test explores a policy change in China in which men are granted the same rights as women in passing residency permits (hukou) to their children regardless of their spouse's hukou – a change resulting in a less complementary status inheritance technology. We find that this change…

  • Financial Decentralization and Geographical Stratification of Access to Higher Education in China

    Tao Li•ARTICLE•Chinese Sociological Review•2017•Citada por: 4•Referências: 27

Using a new enrollment dataset of Shanghai public colleges for 2009, we investigate whether the increase in the stratification of Chinese higher education is attributed to the decentralization of higher education finance. We discover that colleges in Shanghai not only admit significantly more in-province students (which we refer to as quantity bias), but also quietly place more out-of-province students, especially those from poor provinces, in lo…

  • The Messenger Game

    Open Access•Tao Li•ARTICLE•Journal of Theoretical Politics•2007•Citada por: 1•Referências: 9

We challenge the generally accepted ally principle in legislative politics that a preference outlier committee will distort information to the legislative floor. If interest groups (or other third parties) are rational, they will withhold the most precise information for fear of committee misrepresentation. As a result, even preference outlier committees could be disciplined by their own ignorance not to distort the lobbyist message, as they are …

  • Barriers to adherence to antiretroviral medications among patients living with HIV in southern China

Lora Sabin, Lora L Sabin et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2008

Although China's government is rapidly expanding access to antiretroviral therapy, little is known about barriers to adherence among Chinese HIV-infected patients, particularly among injection drug users. To better understand barriers to antiretroviral treatment adherence, we conducted a qualitative research study, using both focus group and key informant methods, among 36 HIV-positive men and women in Dali, in southwestern China. All interviews …

We therefore assessed an adherence intervention among HIV-positive patients in southwestern China. Eighty subjects were enrolled and monitored for 6 months. Sixty-eight remaining subjects were randomized to intervention/control arms. In months 7-12, intervention subjects were…
