The Economic Cost of Alcohol Abuse
Relationship of microbial indicators to health effects at marine bathing beaches
Findings are described from the second year of an epidemiological-microbiological study conducted at New York City beaches as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program to develop health effects-recreational water quality criteria. Symptomatology rates among swimmers (defined as immersion of the head in the water) relative to nonswimming but beach-going controls at a "barely acceptable" (BA) beach and a "relatively unpolluted" (RU) …

Denial of Drinking in a Household Survey
About one-third of a representative sample of New Yorkers denied drinking alcoholic beverages, a proportion considerably larger than that found in national surveys. More denial of drinking was found among older than younger respondents, the less-educated, Puerto Ricans, Italians and Jews. It is suggested that younger Italians and Jews are not following traditional drinking patterns and that the older ones misinterpreted the question

Implicative Drinking Reported in a Household Survey
In a mental health research project, a representative sample of 706 New York City adults was asked about personal drinking behavior and resultant problems. An implicative-drinking index was devised from the 10 relevant questions and scored as follows: present or past drinking problems, 3 points each; too much drinking, 2; and personal reasons for drinking, 1 point each. A score of 3 was selected to identify implicative drinkers. Of the 706, 44 we…
Identifying Alcoholics in Population Surveys; A Report on Reliability
In 1960–61, 132 alcoholics were identified in a large community health survey conducted in the Washington Heights Health District of New York City, yielding a rate of 19 alcoholics per 1,000 respondents aged over 20 years. To test the reliability of such surveys, 99 of the 132 were located and reinterviewed with their spouses in 1963–64, together with a comparison group of 343 respondents who had not been identified as alcoholics in the first sur…

Childhood Symptoms in Children of Alcoholics and Comparison Group Parents
Respondents identified in a representative community sample as alcoholics, persons with chronic stomach trouble, and persons with 'neither pathology were re-interviewed with their spouses in the current study. Women in the alcoholic and comparison groups were asked a series of childhood symptom questions about their children. More symptomatology was reported for the children of alcoholics, corroborating the frequent general observations about the…
An Analysis of Retest Scores for an Index of Psycho-Physiological Disturbance
The Epidemiology of Alcoholism in an Urban Residential Area
Increasing acceptance of alcoholism as a public health problem suggests the need for studying its prevalence and its distribution in the population to identify vulnerable subgroups. Such an epidemiologic survey of alcoholism was undertaken by the National Council on Alcoholism (NCA) in conjunction with the Washington Heights Master Sample Survey of 1960-1961. The community survey phase of the research program of the National Council on Alcoholism…

Some Characteristics of Alcoholic Marriages Differentiated by Level of Deviance
A sample of 262 women married to alcoholics were asked about their childhood, courtship, and marital experiences, stressing their husbands' drinking behavior and their own attitudes toward marriage and alcoholism. The sample was divided into two based on the level of social or economic associated with the husband's drinking, and comparisons were made between the two deviance groups on personal and marital characteristics. The group with more asso…
Differences between Families Admitting and Denying an Existing Drinking Problem
In an urban community survey of 7,276 adults, 132 problem drinkers (2 per cent) were identified. Of these, 99 were established by the screening questions, and 33 were recognized by interviewers' reported observations. There were few marked differences between the two groups although higher class families, Negro Baptists and parents with drinking sons more frequently denied problem drinking, while Irish, Puerto Ricans and males in general more rea…
