  • Formalising and Informalising Labour in Vietnam

    Joan Buckley•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Asia•2023•Citada por: 3•Referências: 29

Scholarship on labour informalisation in Vietnam pulls in two different directions. One set of policy-focused literature suggests that there is an increasing formalisation of labour. Literature of critical labour studies and cognate disciplines, however, suggests the opposite; an increasing informalisation of labour as workers must accept less security of employment and income. This article argues that these two trends are both true, and that the…

  • Freedom of Association in Vietnam

    Open Access•Joan Buckley, Joe Buckley•ARTICLE•Global Labour Journal•2021

Vietnam is a one-party state with a single state-led union federation and significant numbers of wildcat strikes. In January 2021, independent worker representative organisations became legal. Murdock's recent analysis of standardized behavior associated with pairs of cross-sex kin emphasizes the "nearly identical distribution" throughout the world. While recognizing the broad similarities, the authors point to certain differences between continental areas that are related to specific social factors, including the structure of descent groups and the nature of marriage arrangements

Opening ParagraphAfrica is notable for the extent to which women participate in cultivation. An examination of the contribution of men and women by means of 'The Ethnographic Atlas (Ethnology, 1967) shows that women play the major part in cultivation in 45 per cent of societies in Africa as a whole, and in 53 per cent of sub-Saharan societies. We are concerned here with the contribution women make to cultivation (in pastoral as well as purely far…
