Working at the Bar
Commercial sex is the occupation of a significant portion of the women of the world, providing economic support for millions of people and their families.Working at the Baris the first-ever, long-term, longitudinal, in-depth study of a large sex work industry—and Thailand, the most prominent nation in the rapidly growing sex tourism industry, makes for an excellent case study. Communication during assassination attempts
Diffusion of news of attacks on President Reagan and the Pope were studied in three samples of telephone and face‐to‐face interviews. The first sample of 277 interviews was completed within hours of the Reagan shooting and the second sample of 77 interviews within hours of the attack on the Pope. The third set of 96 interviews was conducted 15 weeks after the second sample. The first two interview sets were designed to measure the diffusion proce…
The Alpha Percentage and Experimentwise Error Rates in Communication Research
Experimentwise error rates of the type proposed by Ryan (1959) are discussed and contrasted with anew measure of the likelihood that the results of a series of significance tests are Type I errors. This new measure, the Alpha Percentage (a%), shares the advantages of experimentwise error rates over individual alpha levels in reducing Type I errors in communication research, but the Alpha Percentage has much greater power than currently used exper…
The Effects of Initial Belief Level on Inoculation Theory and Its Proposed Mechanisms
McGuire's inoculation theory employs an analogy to predict the effectiveness of defenses in inducing resistance to persuasion. In discussing this analogy, McGuire states that it is necessary to use beliefs which have not been attacked previously. Many studies have used inoculation theory to predict resistance with beliefs which have been attacked. We argue that McGuire is incorrect in his interpretation of the analogy and discuss an experimental …

News diffusion of the George Wallace shooting
Reactions to the Wallace shooting and awareness of it indicate that the role of interpersonal first sources of information was much greater than expected from previous studies. A second study supported the hypothesis that delays between the event and the time‐of‐interview account for the apparent lack of interpersonal influence in other studies, through the dissociation of source and content within the receiver
Source evaluation, syllogistic content, and judgments of logical validity by high- and low-dogmatic persons.
