Although the Miao are one of the "nationalities" currently recognized within China's borders, whether the close to seven and a half million people currently categorized as Miao constitute a nationality (a single ethnic group) is somewhat problematic, as are earlier usages of the term Miao (lit., "sprouts," "seedlings," and in some usages, "weeds") to indicate a number of disparate indigenous peoples distributed across Southwest China.Populations …
