The Cambridge Companion to Walter Pater
This is the first and only comprehensive introductory study of Walter Pater, novelist, short story writer, literary critic, and philosopher. One of the late nineteenth century's most important and least understood writers, Pater evinced a new mode of hedonism that presented a fundamental challenge to the prevailing moral and social norms of his contemporaries, responding to post-Darwinian sensibility, waning faith, and new philosophies in ethics …

Researching the musical lifecourse in music therapy, community music and music education
This article presents a diversity of approaches and a heterogeneity of research methods used, where the aim is to contribute to understandings of how musical engagement across the lifecourse may foster health and well being. Multiple perspectives and methodological approaches located in the disciplines of music therapy, community music and music education will be described, including identifying affordances and constraints associated with documen…
Redefining excellence and inclusion
In this article, we present an overview and summary of the work undertaken by the Music and Social Intervention Network. Exploring the themes of ‘excellence’ and ‘inclusion’, we begin with a consideration of the four articles presented within this special issue and then proceed onto a reflection surrounding wider discussions prevalent at the public events held as part of the project. Following this, we outline five key discourses that emerged thr…

Note 57
The purpose of this article is to evoke an approach to scholarship that is resonant with community music’s ethos and practice. After contextualizing questions that have driven my work, I engage with a ‘philosophical critique’ of community music, published in 2016, through one of its endnotes and, in so doing, reveal why the text is problematic and ‘out of step’ with contemporary thinking concerning understandings of community music. Following thi…

Community Music
Community musicians move in many diverse settings, and facilitate local music activities in a wide array of community contexts including schools, hospitals, places of worship, music festivals, and prisons. Underscoring the importance of active participation and sensitivity to context, they integrate activities such as listening, improvising, inventing and performing while emphasizing equality of opportunity and fostering a diverse and welcoming e…
One-to-One Encounters
In this article, I explore the claim that one-to-one encounters between community music facilitators and music participants can be described as friendships. By exploring the relational structure through the call and the welcome, I make some general comments on friendship before finally tackling the question lying at the heart of this article: How might we understand the notion of being a friend within an educative relationship
Community music and the welcome
This article considers three interconnecting ideas surrounding community music practice; (1) the workshop as a distinctive approach through which people are given opportunities to engage with active music making (2) the welcome as a preparatory thought and consequential gesture, inviting potential music participants to the workshop space, and (3) safety without safety, an idea that describes the practice of the welcome within the workshop event. …
The politics of life after death
This essay relates Ondaatje's novel to the philosophical fictions of Foucault and others in order to signal the contribution that literary texts can make to a "political and ethical enterprise that carries anti‐racist dissidence into a deeper confrontation with the history, philosophy, and jurisprudence of 'transmodernity'" (Gilroy 53). Situating the Sri Lankan civil war within broader geopolitical and legal struggles, Ondaatje's anti‐war novel d…
Growth, pathways and groundwork
This article suggests that community music in the United Kingdom emerged as a sub-strand of the community arts movement during the political and cultural changes of the late 1960s and the early 1970s. Through five themes: musicians in residence, music animateur, music collectives and punk rock, definitions, and training, Part 1 of this article establishes the significant trajectory of the community arts movement. This groundwork provides the foun…
Acts of hospitality
This article will investigate the notion of 'community' within the aspirations of Community Music. Guiding this study are the questions: How is community made manifest through Community Music? What joins the notion of community to that of music? Two distinct sections will frame this research: (1) an etymological consideration of the word 'community', followed by a rethinking of its status as a hospitable act of welcoming; and (2) a case study tha…
