‘Art And Toil’
The East Fen of Lincolnshire was the most northerly of the virtually continuous stretches of freshwater wetland that reached almost to Cambridge in the south. It differed from the other fenlands in not being drained until the nineteenth century. It occupied a basin which had been flooded in late Roman times but thereafter colonised by a series of ecosystems, some of which were used as resources. The source materials are mostly printed, with the a…

Lateglacial to Mid-Holocene Vegetation History in the Eastern Vale of Pickering, Northeast Yorkshire, UK
Palaeolake Flixton, in the eastern Vale of Pickering in northeast Yorkshire, UK, existed as open water during the Lateglacial and early to mid-Holocene, until hydroseral succession and gradual terrestrialisation changed it to an area of fen and basin peatland by the later mid-Holocene. The environs of the lake were occupied by Late Palaeolithic and Mesolithic people over thousands of years and many Early Mesolithic sites, in particular, have been…
Bronze Age and Later Vegetation History on the Limestone Tabular Hills of North-East Yorkshire, UK
This paper presents the results of palynological investigations on the limestone Tabular Hills of the North York Moors in north-east England. These limestone areas have the highest concentration of post-Mesolithic archaeological sites in this upland region, but because of the geology and paucity of suitable organic deposits they have had almost no palynological research with which to assess the land-use history of these cultures, nor their impact…
Medieval and early modern management of the River Lymn and Wainfleet Haven (east Lincolnshire, England)
The post-Roman evolution of the landscape of coastal east Lincolnshire exhibits regional links from early medieval times in the case of major fen and sea banks, to which can be added local links and actions for bank-building, pasture reclamation, harbours, fisheries, and the impress of local government. In a landscape much defined by water, now largely insignificant watercourses were once the scene of considerable concern. In the case of the Lymn…
Evidence for vegetation changes associated with mesolithic man in Britain
In Britain the case for neolithic and later forest clearance is unequivocably established but is has been customary to regard mesolithic man as a hunter, fisher, and collector, who did not affect his environment beyond his immediate surroundings. But Star Carr is but one type of habitat used by mesolithic man, representing a lowland "wet" site that is in close contact with a lake and in a generally damp area. In addition there are numerous instan…
The landscape development of the Tofts of south-east Lincolnshire 1100–1650
In a further dissection of the subtleties of landscape evolution in south-east Lincolnshire, the nature and history of the Tofts is examined. The name refers to a belt of raised silts which lie between the Low Grounds and the Marsh. The hypotheses of the origin of this land type are discussed and note made of the agreement that the top few metres of sediment and soil are products of the human economy and most probably the result of salt-making. T…
Interpreting Nature
Human society has constructed many varied notions of the environment. Scientific information about the environment is often seen as the only worthwhile knowledge. This ignores the complexities created by interaction between people and the environment. Idealist thinking argues that everything we know is based on a construct of our minds and that all is possible. Can both be correct and true? Interpreting Nature explores the position of humanity in…
Rural landscapes between the East Fen and the Tofts in south-east Lincolnshire 1100–1550
Historical work has tended to lump together the different types of terrain in lowland Lincolnshire. This paper looks at the landscape subregions between the southern end of the Lincolnshire Marsh and the village of Wrangle and examines the history of one of them in more detail. Sources of evidence include documents, aerial photographs, LiDAR, modern maps and knowledge of the terrain. The picture in medieval and early modern times was one of great…
The Age of the Late Mesolithic on the North York Moors, England
There has been a considerable amount of pollen-analytical research on the palaeoecology and palaeoenvironment of the Late Mesolithic culture of the North York Moors upland in north-east Yorkshire, which together with the Pennines is the most prolific area in Britain for Late Mesolithic flint sites. The peat sediments of the Moors have provided detailed data on the vegetation history of the mid-Holocene, both natural developments and also woodland…
Mesolithic Environments at Star Carr, the Eastern Vale of Pickering and Environs
Star Carr in the eastern Vale of Pickering is an emblematic site for the British Early Mesolithic and for the development of wetland archaeology, being one of the first studies where scientific techniques of environmental reconstruction were integrated within an archaeological research strategy, allowing detailed understanding of site conditions and the environmental context of human activities. Pollen diagrams from Star Carr and around palaeo-La…
Woodland disturbance and possible land-use regimes during the Late Mesolithic in the English uplands
Environmentalist thinking and/in geography
In recent years, a new type of determinist environmental thinking has emerged. It can be understood to be one strand in a much broader realm of ‘environment talk’. Many human geographers have expressed a combination of scepticism and surprise at the apparently inexorable rise of the neo-environmentalist arguments which differ from early twentieth-century environmental determinism yet continue to draw upon biologistic accounts of human culture. Al…
Ten millennia of changes in ecology and culture
The paper discusses the question of the links between the ecology of the planet and developments in human culture, viewed in the perspective of the last 10,000 years. It tries to avoid simple assignations of environmental determinism or post‐modern constructivist views and is aware of the role of chance and contingency. Trends in the social world that lead to fragmentation or coalescence in that sphere are examined for their environmental consequ…
The World Scale
A brief review of some of the major publications in environmental history at the worldwide and global scales suggests that authors are engaging in more studies that eschew a single approach. They are undertaking the necessary but risky tasks of trying the understand and integrate the knowledges pointed up by many disciplines and by experience. The prospects for progress look bright
An Environmental History of Great Britain
This is a history of the environment of England, Wales and Scotland, and of the interactions of people, place and nature since the last ice sheet withdrew some ten thousand years ago. It is concerned with the changing cultures (in the full anthropological sense) of the peoples inhabiting Britain as well as with the environment they transformed, exploited, abused and cherished. As the author points out, every culture in Britain has had to acknowle…
Ecology into Landscape
The abundant work on the palaeoecology of the northern moorlands of England has been largely focussed on ecological processes. It has shown clearly the transition from tundra to deciduous forest and the impacts of human communities in changing those processes. Even the later hunter-gatherers were responsible for the management of plants and animals so as to maximise their resource base. In this paper an attempt is made to translate the flow-based…

Ecology, Economy, Worldview
Elaborations of the Marxian dicta about the connections between economic modes and worldviews with an environmental component have been made largely in a social frame. Here, some attempt is made to tease out such linkages over a 10,000-year period and to see if they necessarily comprise the same parameters in each major period of economic history. It is concluded that here as in so many ways the late 19th century sees the beginning of a different…

To Civility and to Man's Use
An attempt is made to give a 10,000-year perspective on the relations of history, culture, and the nonhuman world called nature. A Holocene narrative of processes separates human societies and their cultures: things that individuate and pull apart to the point of fragmentation versus those that are binding. These tendencies toward convergence may coalesce, as with the natural sciences or global electronic technology. Equally, they may involve cen…
Environmental thought
A selection of themes in environmental thinking is treated as a set of resonances in which humans talk to each other about what they call “the environment”. The importance of the intellectual as distinct from the pragmatic is recognised but in the end it is reaffirmed that the realist model of the world, if abandoned, might lead to a very frightening prospect indeed. On the other hand, single‐authored sets of resonances are called Utopias and are…

Ecology and Land Use
SINCE HUMAN purpose involves concern for the future, the supply of resources like food and living space for the rapidly increasing population of the world has gained the attention of many writers. In so far as this involves land and water resources and their products, the main contributors to the discussion have been economists, demographers and biologists. It is the purpose of this paper to present some of the findings of a biological character …

Environment and Early Man on Dartmoor, Devon, England
A part from its successes in the Somerset Levels, environmental archaeology has made little headway in studies of the South-west of England. On the uplands this is partially due to the lack of preservation of bone and most other organic remains in the acid soils now present. Again, in the region generally there has been little deposition in basins of the muds, marls and peats accumulated during the Post-glacial that are so valuable for reconstruc…

The Later Mesolithic Period (6000–5000bp) on Glaisdale Moor, North Yorkshire
This paper aims to chronicle the impact of human groups on the ecology of an upland area in N. E. Yorkshire during the last thousand years or so of the Atlantic period (Flandrian II of the UK chronozone system) and the transition into the succeeding Sub-Boreal (Flandrian III) at the decline of Ulmus pollen which is prevalent throughout western Europe at c. 5000 B.P. This investigation differs from many predecessors because it includes a detailed …

The Excavation of a Stone Alignment and Circle at Cholwichtown, Lee Moor, Devonshire, England
The site (National Grid Reference 3X584622) stands on a westward spur of the Penn Beacon ridge near the southern edge of Dartmoor. As is common throughout the moor the underlying rock is granite and in the neighbourhood of Cholwichtown this has altered to ‘china’ clay. There are a number of outcrops, but in most places the granite has a light covering of soil on which a thin layer of black raw humus, peat-like in appearance, has formed. This now …

In 1978 Robin Hanbury-Tenison and a team of scientists went to study the Gunung Mulu National Park in North Borneo - one of the most remote and untouched regions of tropical rainforest left in the world. They found a dramatic landscape of virgin forest, lush hidden valleys and a spectacular network of caves, as well as a rich variety of exotic species of plants and animals and the Penan people, the nomadic inhabitants of Mulu. But this, one of th…
