The Relationship between Inner Versus Outer Locus of Control and Achievement in Black Middle School Children
Minority children's expectancies account for a large proportion of the variance in their achievement. This study examined the relationship between each of several dimensions of the expectancies of fifth through eighth grade children and their school achievement. A Decision-Theoretic Technique for the Illumination of Cultural Differences
At a conference of U.S. and Japanese social scientists, a decision-theoretic, multiattribute utilities methodology was used to elucidate values and beliefs of each group. The ten-step process requires each group to specify their values and to rank order and importance weight them. Then a series of judgments are made about the extent to which a list of action alternatives is likely to maximize each value. Compared with the Japanese, the U.S. group…
Children in Harlem's Community Controlled Schools 1
A community controlled school district in Harlem compared with a non‐community controlled district showed: stronger intellectual and expressive climate in the schools, greater parent use of school buildings, more positive teacher‐pupil‐classroom interactions, and shifts in children's expectancies toward greater awareness of the power of parents and teachers in the schools. Movement responses in simple concept learning
In two experiments, a teaching methodology that maximized subjects responses in the learning of simple verbal concepts was contrasted with a traditional method of concept teaching and control condition. In the first experiment, lower-class black pre-school children showed superior concept learning in the movement treatment, and greater attentiveness and verbal memory for new material.
