The role of referent cohesiveness in variable subject expression in L2 Spanish
This study examines the development of variable subject expression in Spanish across multiple proficiency levels of second-language learners. We employ a cross-sectional design and a written contextualized task in order to explore the differences in rates of subject forms as well as the degree to which factors related to referent cohesiveness constrain the acquisition of subject expression. We include a group of native speakers from the same comm…
Sociolinguistic Competence and Interpreting Variable Structures in a Second Language
Learners must develop the ability to vary language according to linguistic and situational factors to produce context-appropriate utterances. Likewise, interpreting the additional meaning conveyed through language variation is essential for successful communication. Nevertheless, research on the interpretation of the variable copulas in Spanish is scarce and we do not know how individual lexical items and patterns of co-occurrence of adjectives w…
Subject expression in Spanish
Research on variation demonstrates that analyses of frequency and predictors of use contribute to our understanding of languages. Investigations of subject expression in Spanish in particular have identified differences across person and number of the verb that suggest that linguists should focus their analyses exclusively on a single category of that variable (e.g., Torres-Cacoullos and Travis 2010). The current paper examines the subject-expres…
Sociolinguistics and Second Language Acquisition
Sociolinguistics and Second Language Acquisition is a comprehensive textbook that bridges the gap between the fields of sociolinguistics and second language acquisition, exploring the variety of ways in which social context influences the acquisition of a second language. It reviews basic principles of sociolinguistics, provides a unified account of the multiple theoretical approaches to social factors in second languages, summarizes the growing …
What a Bayesian Analysis Can Do for SLA
This study constitutes the first statistical analysis to employ a Bayesian multinomial probit model in the investigation of subject expression in first and second language (L2) Spanish. The study analyzes the use of third-person subject-expression forms and demonstrates that the following variables are important for subject expression: perseveration, switch reference, number of the verb, specificity, verbal tense/mood/aspect, object pronoun, refe…
Copula use in the Spanish of Venezuela
This investigation extends the research on the use of Spanish copulas ser and estar in Venezuela to all [copula + adjective] contexts (see De Jonge 1993; Malaver 2000 for work on expressions of age). Findings reveal that resultant state, adjective class, predicate type, experience with the referent, susceptibility to change, socioeconomic level, age and frame of reference are included in the statistical model as strong predictors of estar . The a…
Assessing the Use of Multiple Forms in Variable Contexts
The current study represents a detailed examination of the linguistic variables that are significantly related to verb-form use in contexts of future-time reference for advanced learners and native speakers of Spanish. The results show that the factors lexical temporal indicator, clause type and temporal distance are related to the verb forms that both groups use to express the function of futurity and that (un)certainty and grammatical person an…
Variation in L2 Spanish
The field of second language (L2) variation, focusing mostly on English and French, has existed for over 30 years, documenting the effects of linguistic context, social context and individual characteristics on learner language. Research on the L2 acquisition of variation in Spanish has experienced tremendous growth over the past decade and currently includes empirical studies of the acquisition of nearly a dozen variable structures based on data…
Marking past tense in second language acquisition
Marking past tense in second language acquisition, by R. Salaberry, London, Continuum, 2008, xiv + 289 pp., US$150 (hardback), ISBN 978-1-84706-238-3 One of the most widely researched topics in the
The Development of L2 Spanish Intonation During a Study Abroad Immersion Program in León, Spain
The current study is the first technically-principled examination of second language Spanish intonation as it develops in a study abroad context. As such, it aims to identify patterns of development related to overall F0 contours and final boundary movements by creating individual profiles for each L2 learner at the beginning and the end of their stay abroad. Our data come from 5 English-speaking learners of Spanish enrolled in a study abroad imm…
Beyond “Naturalistic”
The exploration of the role of naturally-occurring data in studies of second language acquisition begins by assessing the ways in which the term “naturalistic” may apply to second languages. Instead of classifying tasks and the data they elicit as natural or unnatural, this paper presents a view of tasks that is multidimensional, rather than oppositional, and highlights some of the features of tasks that appear to pose significant differences in …

The SLA of Variable Structures
This study examines the acquisition of copula choice, more particularly the contrast between ser and estar ('to be') in Spanish by native speakers of Portuguese. Our research differs from previous work because the first language of the participants included also contains a copula contrast. Our previous analysis of data collected in adult L1 Spanish and Portuguese L2 Spanish, and data collected in Portuguese from adult L1 Portuguese, demonstrated …
Copula choice in the Spanish of Galicia
Although ser and estar have been studied extensively (Luján 1981; Clements 1988; Leonetti 1994; Fernández Leborans 1999; Geeslin 2005), less is known about how the use of these copulas varies from one Spanish-speaking region to another. To date, sociolinguistic research has been conducted on Spanish in the United States (Kirschner and Stephens 1988; Silva-Corvalán 1994), in Mexico (Gutiérrez 1992), and in Venezuela (de Jonge 1993), showing that s…
Second Language Acquisition of Variable Structures in Spanish by Portuguese Speakers
This study provides a model for examining the second language (L2) acquisition of structures where the first language (L1) and L2 are similar, and where native speaker (NS) use varies. Research on the copula contrast in Spanish ( ser and estar mean “to be”) has shown that an assessment of learner choice cannot rely on an error analysis (Geeslin, 2001, 2003a; Geeslin & Guijarro‐Fuentes, 2004). Obligatory contexts are difficult to identify because …
Structure, Meaning, and Acquisition in Spanish
Student Self-Assessment in the Foreign Language Classroom
Recent research on the teaching and learning of Spanish shows an increased focus on student-centered learning environments and corresponding methods of evaluation. Such renovations encourage students to take responsibility for learner outcomes and to individualize goals and tasks. The implementation of student self-assessment is an important mechanism through which learners interact with instructors and develop the requisite introspective skills …
A Comparison of Copula Choice
Research on the acquisition of copula choice has shown that learners are not accurate with this structure, even after several years of instruction (Briscoe, 1995; Ryan & Lafford, 1992). Previous research has also shown that the language development of novice learners can be assessed through a multifeature contextual analysis, similar to those used in sociolinguistic research, thereby allowing for the inclusion of native-speaker variation in the d…
Semantic transparency as a predictor of copula choice in second-language acquisition
Despite the potential benefits of interdisciplinary research (Giacalone Ramat 1995; Preston 1989), there are relatively few recent examples of studies that cross boundaries in an effort to strengthen the individual investigation. The purpose of the current research is to illustrate the importance of applying findings from sociolinguistic research to the investigation of the second-language acquisition (SLA) of copula choice in Spanish by English …
