  • Class Tensions in the Games of Homer

    Open Access•Thomas F Scanlon•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the Institute of…•2018•Referências: 9

Three contest scenes in Homer reveal a thematic concern with class tension: the two contests with Epeius in Iliad 23, Odysseus's encounter with Euryalus in Odyssey 8, and Odysseus's boxing match with Iros in Odyssey 18. Epeius is a comic scapegoat who succeeds in challenging the elite Euryalus, boasts ineptly, and is later ridiculed. Odysseus in Odyssey 8 is also challenged by a (different) nobleman named Euryalus, whom Odysseus rebukes, saying t…

  • Contesting Ancient Mediterranean Sport

    Thomas F Scanlon, Thomas Scanlon•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2009•Citada por: 1•Referências: 15

This essay sketches the ways in which ancient sport history has come of age in the last century or so, and suggests selectively some timely themes in the study of ancient Mediterranean sport. It begins with two observations about this area of study: first the extent and the limits of the legacy of Greek and Roman sport in the world tradition; and second, the limits and biases of ancient sources. Then there is a brief discussion of how the study o…

  • The Dispersion of Pederasty and the Athletic Revolution in Sixth-Century BC Greece

    Thomas F Scanlon•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2005•Citada por: 4•Referências: 15

Dorian Crete and Thebes are conventionally seen by ancient sources as the originators of pederasty; modern historians see support for this view in Dorian male-centered militarism and sexual segregation in upbringing. Here athletic culture, including training, nudism, and competition, is argued to be a chief 'trigger' for the emergence of pederasty in Sparta and its relatively rapid spread to other Greek states in the seventh to sixth centuries BC…

  • Sallust's Bellum Catilinae

Thomas F Scanlon, Sallust Sallust et al.•ARTICLE•The Classical World•1988•Citada por: 21

In his Bellum Catilinae, C. Sallustius Crispus or Sallust (86-35/34 B.C.E.) recounts the dramatic events of the year 63 B.C.E. when a disgruntled and impoverished nobleman, L. Sergius Catilina, after two electoral defeats, made himself the leader of a group of heavily indebted young aristocrats and the Roman poor and tried to kill his rival Cicero and overthrow the government. With his trademark archaizing style, Sallust skillfully captures the d…
