In Summer 2002, when the International Musicological Society (IMS) gathered for its quiquennial meeting in Leuven, I was still a relatively junior scholar, with only a few grants and publications to my name. My presentation, "When Is a Madrigal Not a Madrigal?," focused on challenging the status of the musical score, which for over a century had been the primary tool for the study, analysis and performance of Renaissance music. After one set of a…

  • The performance of polyphony in early 16th-century Italian convents

    Laurie Stras•ARTICLE•Early Music•2017

This article explores evidence for polyphonic music in Italian convents during the first half of the 16th century. It presents a summary of documentary evidence relating to conventual music in the pre-Tridentine era, alongside practical evidence from contemporary treatises regarding methods by which convent choirs could develop a polyphonic repertory from existing music. It revisits claims for mandatory downwards transposition of music written in…

Although a wheelchair-user and permanently disabled through polio, the southern American singer Connie Boswell was one of radio and vaudeville's biggest stars in the 1930s. She and her sisters were a compelling force in American popular entertainment for the first half of the decade; and when the group split in 1936, Connie carried on a solo career in radio, recording, film and television for another twenty-five years. Connie's unique position as…

The New Orleans hot jazz vocal trio the Boswell Sisters was one of the leading ensembles of the 1930s. Enormously popular with audiences, the Boswells were also recognized by colleagues and peers to be among the finest singers, instrumentalists, and arrangers of their day. Many jazz historians remember them as the first successful white singers who truly "sounded black," yet they rarely interrogate what "sounding black" meant for the Boswells, no…
