Science and Moral Philosophy in the Scottish Enlightenment
Any educated Scot at the end of the seventeenth century would have come to a consideration of moral philosophy from a prior understanding of his duties as they were taught by the ministers of the Kirk. As a child, he would have learned from The shorter catechism, Answer 41, that “The moral law is summarily comprehended in the ten commandments”, which the Lord spoke to Moses from burning Mount Sinai, where He also wrote them on two stone tablets.
