Neil De Marchi•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2019

This approach generated volumes of insightful history on the major problems in the US economy after World War II and solutions tried at the time. The same themes infuse Craufurd’s …

  • The Popperian Legacy in Economics

    Open Access•Neil De Marchi•BOOK•Popperian Legacy in Economics•1988

This volume examines just why and in what sense, Sir Karl Popper's view of empirical falsifiability as the distinguishing characteristic of science has found appeal among economists. The limitations of this tenet, both for a philosophy of science and as a guideline to economic inquiry, are examined, as are several of the proposed alternatives.

  • Mill's Unrevised Philosophy of Economics

    Open Access•Neil De Marchi•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1986

Hausman has argued that Mill in the Logic demands verification of qualified, inexact statements if they are to be considered lawlike. This puts Mill in line with a reasonable interpretation of what modern microeconomists are about, but requires the additional hypothesis that Mill abandoned his earlier stress on modal truth in his 1836 essay on the method of economics. The paper maintains that neither textual nor contextual evidence supports this …
