The Politicization of Sufism in Iraq’s Transition from Baʿthist Quasi-Secular Nationalism to Competing Sect-Centric Visions of National Unity
Since the 1980s, Iraq has witnessed an escalating politicization of Islam under Ṣaddām Ḥusayn’s Baʿth regime. After the regime’s fall in 2003, political mobilization took place along ethno- and sect-centric lines, resulting in the predominance of Shīʿī Islamist state- and nation-building, the emergence of Sunnī rejectionism, accompanied by two cycles of sect-coded civil war (2005-2007 and 2010-2013), and the rise of (Sunnī) Islamist terrorism. This paper revisits the view that the 'Sterling Agreements' of 1968-74 - bilateral contracts between the UK and sterling-holding governments - marked a successful paradigm shift towards sterling's managed 'retirement'. Share trading activity and the rise of the rentier in the UK before 1920
Using a hand-collected dataset, we examine share trading activity over the period 1882–1920 for the North British and Mercantile Insurance Company, one of the largest UK companies of the time. Our main finding is that the steady flow of rentiers into the shareholding constituency of this company stymied share trading activity. Another important finding is that share trading still occurred during the closure of the stock exchange in 1914, but on a…

The portions of the Balfarg/Balbirnie ceremonial complex excavated between 1983 and 1985 are described and related to the portions dug previously: Balbirnie stone circle (76/3594) and Balfarg henge (83/10516).The prehistoric ceremonial use of the area seems to have lasted from early in the third millennium until late in the second millennium BC (in terms of uncalibrated radiocarbon dates). Excavations at stone circles 1 and 11 on Machrie Moor revealed previous use of the land on which they were situated, with features dating back to the earlier Neolithic.
