  • Why inequality could spread Covid-19

Open Access•Faheem Ahmed, Naeem Ahmed et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Public Health•2020

Pandemics rarely affect all people in a uniform way. The Black Death in the 14th century reduced the global population by a third, with the highest number of deaths observed among the poorest populations.1 Densely populated with malnourished and overworked peasants, medieval Europe was a fertile breeding ground for the bubonic plague. Seven centuries on—with a global gross domestic product of almost US$100 trillion—is our world adequately resourc…

  • Intergenerational Earnings Mobility in Post‐Soviet Russia

    Open Access•Gleb V Borisov, Christopher A Pissarides•ARTICLE•Economica•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 19

We make use of longitudinal data for the Russian economy over 1994–2016 to obtain earnings information about parents and children. We show that rank correlations give reliable estimates, and find intergenerational correlations for sons and daughters that are comparable to those found in the USA and the UK. Sons earn more than daughters conditional on education and parents’ rank. Observable household characteristics and unobservables contribute ab…

  • Unemployment in the Great Recession

    Open Access•Christopher A Pissarides•ARTICLE•Economica•2013•Citada por: 3•Referências: 13

This paper studies the responses of unemployment in Germany, the USA and the UK to the Great Recession of 2008–9 using Beveridge curve analysis, and in the entire OECD using other techniques. It is shown that the UK suffered from recession but no structural problems; the USA suffered from structural unemployment during the recovery; Germany exhibited a much better performance both during and after the recession. The rise in OECD unemployment is b…

  • Why Do Firms Offer ‘Employment Protection’

    Open Access•Christopher A Pissarides•ARTICLE•Economica•2010•Referências: 28

This paper derives optimal employment contracts when workers are risk‐averse and there are employment and unemployment risks. Without income insurance, consumption rises during employment and falls during unemployment. Optimal employment contracts offer severance compensation and sometimes give notice before dismissal. Severance compensation smooths consumption during employment, and dismissal delays insure partially against the unemployment risk…

  • Employment Outcomes in the Welfare State

    L Rachel Ngai, Christopher A Pissarides•ARTICLE•Revue économique•2008•Referências: 2

  • Structural Change in a Multisector Model of Growth

    L Rachel Ngai, Christopher A Pissarides•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2007

We study a multisector model of growth with differences in TFP growth rates across sectors and derive sufficient conditions for the coexistence of structural change, characterized by sectoral labor reallocation and balanced aggregate growth. The conditions are weak restrictions on the utility and production functions. Along the balanced growth path, labor employed in the production of consumption goods gradually moves to the sector with the lowes…

  • Scale Effects in Markets with Search

    Open Access•Barbara Petrongolo, Christopher A Pissarides et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2006•Citada por: 10•Referências: 26

Estimates of aggregate matching functions may miss important scale effects in frictional labour markets because of the reactions of job seekers to scale. We estimate a semi-structural model of search and matching on a British sample of unemployed people, testing for scale effects on the probability of receiving an offer and on the distribution of wage offers. We find them only in wage offers but we also find that reservation wages rise to deliver…

Barbara Petrongolo, Christopher A Pissarides•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Literature•2001

This paper surveys the microfoundations, empirical evidence, and estimation issues underlying the aggregate matching function. There is no consensus yet on microfoundations but one is emerging on estimation. An aggregate, constant returns, Cobb-Douglas matching function with hires as a function of vacancies and unemployment has been successfully estimated for several countries. Recent work has utilized disaggregated data to go beyond aggregate es…

This paper considers the implications of four kinds of labour market policies for the 1980s rise in European unemployment: unemployment compensation, active labour market policies, employment protection legislation and taxation. It finds evidence that all have played a role in the determination of unemployment and discusses the mechanisms involved, the extent of the influence of each and the lessons learned from this experience. • Unemployment Responses to ‘Skill‐biased’ Technology Shocks

    Open Access•Dale T Mortensen, Christopher A Pissarides•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•1999•Citada por: 21

Do skill‐biased shocks that increase the spread of labour productivities, interacting with different policy regimes, explain the rise in unemployment in Europe relative to the United States in the 1980s and 1990s? The hypothesis is an implication of a version of the Mortensen and Pissarides (1994) model of equilibrium unemployment which allows for worker heterogeneity. A calibrated version of the model implies that a similar unemployment increase…

  • Job Creation and Job Destruction in the Theory of Unemployment

Dale T Mortensen, Christopher A Pissarides•ARTICLE•The Review of Economic Studies•1994

In this paper we model a job-specific shock process in the matching model of unemployment with non-cooperative wage behaviour. We obtain endogenous job creation and job destruction processes and study their properties. We show that an aggregate shock induces negative correlation between job creation and job destruction whereas a dispersion shock induces positive correlation. The job destruction process is shown to have more volatile dynamics than…

  • Labour Flexibility and Wages

    Open Access•Samuel Bentolila, Juan J Dolado et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Policy•1994

Spanish labour markets Samuel Bentolila and Juan J. Dolado Temporary jobs have been on the rise in Europe, partly in response to firms' desire for higher flexibility in employment, and partly because flexibility is widely believed to help bring down unemployment. However, the flexibility gained through temporary contracts hardly affects the core of permanent employees. Instead, temporary jobs result in the emergence of a dual labour market. Worse…

  • Loss of Skill During Unemployment and the Persistence of Employment Shocks

    Christopher A Pissarides•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•1992

This paper shows that when unemployed workers lose some of their skills, the effects of a temporary shock to employment can persist for a long time. The key mechanism is a thin market externality that reduces the supply of jobs when the duration of unemployment increases. The paper develops an overlapping-generations model of search equilibrium and shows that different patterns of persistence and multiple equilibria are possible even with constan…

  • Real Wages and Unemployment in Australia

    Christopher A Pissarides•ARTICLE•Economica•1991•Citada por: 2

This paper estimates a three-equation model of the Australian labour market, for employment, real wages and the participation rate. It uses the model to study the role of incomes policies in containing real wage growth and the reasons behind the changes in unemployment since 1970. It finds that incomes policies have not been important in controlling real wages; the rise in unemployment in the 1970s was due to the rise in tax rates and unemploymen…

It proposes a framework for the analysis of unemployment and finally applies the framework to the analysis of the rise in unemployment in Britain after 1979. The framework is based on bilateral monopoly in the labour market, and the explanation for the rise in unemployment in Britain rests primarily with a demand-side shock, which caused the rise in 1980-81, and supply-side persisten…

The answer to this was provided by Yaari (1965) (and confirmed in simulations by Fischer, 1973), who showed that, if individuals are uncertain about the date of their death and do not want to run the risk of dying without leaving enough provision for dependants, there will be a non-trivial demand for life insurance.
