The cooperative coaching client
While solution generation and question-answer sequences are key to change in coaching, little is known about the role of questions with a solution-oriented agenda. Even less research exists on clients’ (cooperative) responding activities. To breach this gap, we used Conversation Analysis to investigate responses to wh-questions for solution generation with a special focus on the continuum of (dis-)aligning and (dis-)affiliating responses and the …
Interactional straightforwardness in guidance counselling
A common dilemma of counsellors is to deal with various institutional tasks and demands while being in the service of the client. In this paper, the authors are interested in how this dilemma shows in the Finnish school context, in the work of guidance counsellors who help the pupils to manage their studies and plans for further education. Video-recorded social interaction between guidance counsellors and pupils was studied, using conversation an…
Guidance practitioners’ approaches to building client relationships and solving institutional dilemmas in the Finnish public employment services
This article explores public employment service (PES) guidance practitioners’ interpretations of and approaches to building working relationships with their clients in the context of different kinds of institutional expectations placed on client work. The study was conducted in the context of the recently reformed Finnish PES and focused on new categories of practitioners in municipal service organisations. A discursive analysis of thematic inter…
Praising the client in career guidance
In this article, we explore how praises directed at clients are used in Finnish career guidance encounters. More specifically, we examine how praise works as a tool for attending to the institutional agenda of career guidance. Our data set is a compilation of career and study guidance encounters within schools and universities, including 16 video-recorded and one audio-recorded career guidance sessions with 15 student-clients and 9 professionals.…
Responding to the client’s self-deprecations in career guidance
The paper describes how the client’s self-deprecations are treated in career guidance. While in everyday talk, a preferred response to a self-deprecation is disagreement, the case can be more complex in institutional encounters, considering, for example, epistemic rights to assess the client. Through conversation analysis of video-recorded data, we will show two ways in which career counsellors respond to their client’s self-deprecations: reframi…
Counsellors’ interactional practices for facilitating group members’ affiliative talk about personal experiences in group counselling
Affiliative talk about personal experiences, that is, talk that supports the person’s affective stance towards the experience, is important in all types of counselling. Often, however, this is not the only or even the main goal of the counselling. We investigate what interactional practices counsellors use to facilitate group members’ affiliative talk about their personal experiences in a problem focused, health promotion group counselling. The f…
I wish I had a crystal ball
Academic supervision of PhD dissertations and master's theses has traditionally been conceptualised as the pedagogy of the dyadic relationship between master and apprentice. Recently, researchers have argued for a more systemic approach. Yet, many communities lack practices for sharing the pedagogical responsibility of supervision. Consequently, individual teachers face the challenges of supervision alone. We have been involved in university peda…
Papers, documents, and the opening of an academic supervision encounter
Despite a growing interest in the interaction in academic pedagogical settings, the role of texts in the actual interaction has not been systematically addressed. This article examines the practices and orientations through which written documents have a significant role in the openings of supervision encounters. We use videotaped recordings of supervision encounters and adopt conversation-analytical methodology to analyze the data. The analysis …
Student-Initiated Advice in Academic Supervision
The article analyzes student-initiated advice sequences in Finnish master's thesis supervision, encounters where teachers and students discuss students' ongoing thesis work. Drawing from prior conversation analytic research on advice giving, advice is analyzed here as a problem-solving activity. The article presents two questioning formats used by students. Format I, less frequent, invokes a clear lack of knowledge or competence in a relevant the…
Conversation Analysis and Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a 'talking cure'- clients voice their troubles to therapists, who listen, prompt, question, interpret and generally try to engage in a positive and rehabilitating conversation with their clients. Using the sophisticated theoretical and methodological apparatus of Conversation Analysis - a radical approach to how language in interaction works - this book sheds light on the subtle and minutely organised sequences of speech in psych…
Avoiding Providing Solutions
This article studies how counsellors in careers training respond to students' problematic advice requests. Conversation analysis is used to examine two strategies counsellors employ when students request advice regarding matters that, according to counselling concepts, they should deal with themselves. The counsellors manage this situation in two ways. They may respond to the request but sanction it afterwards - this happens when the counsellor h…
Evaluative Advice in Educational Counseling
This article analyzes advice giving in counseling within labor market training. A stepwise entry to advice has previously been studied in settings in which profession-als display expert perspectives on “officially ” recommended courses of action. In these settings, elicitation of the advisee’s perspective enables the professional to fit their advice with it, create alignment between the perspectives, and minimize resis-tance. This article shows h…
