Roman pottery production in the coast of Granada (Spain) in the early Late Antiquity
The kiln site of Los Matagallares (Salobreña, Granada, Spain) is one of the most important pottery production sites of the Roman period in southern Iberia, particularly for the third century AD. The workshop produced a wide variety of ceramics, but focused on the manufacture of amphorae for the long-distance trade of local/regional fish products, wine, and other foodstuffs, and thus played an important role in the economy of Roman Baetica during …
Production and Transport of Goods in the Roman Period
Amphorae are key materials in the investigation of the production and transport of goods in ancient times. For the Roman period, many typologies of amphorae are standardised and there are hypotheses concerning their uses and contents mainly based on the shape, provenance, tituli picti and, when preserved, the solid contents. However, there are still many amphora types that have to be investigated in order to better understand the economy of the r…
The Occupation of Benzú Cave (Ceuta) by Neolithic and Bronze Age Societies
Raw materials, technology and use-wear analysis of scrapers and points of the rock shelter of Benzú
The garum fish sauce was a popular ingredient in Roman gastronomy; however, its production process is still unknown, and few remains have been found in the whole ancient world. The aim of this study was to implement a technical approach to determine the ancient garum preparation methods, ingredients and additives by comparing the chemical compositions of archaeological fish remains found in six vessels –dolia– at the ‘Garum Shop’ of Pompeii (Ital…
Combining residue analysis of floors and ceramics for the study of activity areas at the Garum Shop at Pompeii
Early use of marine resources by Middle/Upper Pleistocene human societies
Ancient whale exploitation in the Mediterranean
Middle Palaeolithic Mode 3 lithic technology in the rock-shelter of Benzú (North Africa) and its immediate environmental relationships
Oyster remains in Roman archaeological layers in Circle of the Strait sites is a constant, from the beginning of the Roman conquest up to the Late Antiquity. Oyster-farming evidences are reported in Iulia Traducta (modern Algeciras) in V c. A.D. contexts. The shell remains importance in the context of the fishing and fish-processing activities is an element known in Baelo Claudia’s roman city by diverse sources. In this work we present beforehand…
