Long distance trade of copper ingots from the eastern Copperbelt (Democratic Republic of Congo) to central Malawi
In 1967 a hoard of eight X-shaped copper ingots was discovered in the village of Chombe, in central Malawi. These are all of the HXR ingot type, of which several hundred examples have been found in Zambia and Zimbabwe. They are thought to have been manufactured between the 14th and late 18th centuries CE. In 2024 we sampled five of the Chombe ingots to analyze for lead isotope analysis (LIA) and bulk ICP-MS chemical analysis at the University of …
Chemical and isotopic analyses reconstruct multi-scalar copper circulation networks in West Africa
For the past 50 years, copper sourced from the Akjoujt region has been inferred primarily through the enrichment of arsenic in metal samples from archaeological sites in West Africa. However, arsenic is common to a variety of mineral deposit types and this signature was based on early low-resolution spectroscopic data. Here, we apply lead isotopic and bulk chemical analyses to copper metal and ore samples from the region of Akjoujt, in order to i…
Characterizing ceramic production at Sardis
Lydian pottery in the Roman tradition
The emergence of Sardis as an urban centre in the early Iron Age coincided with local production of fine painted pottery in a distinctive regional idiom. Examples of Lydian-style pottery found across western Anatolia from the eighth century BC attest the city’s growing cultural and economic contacts as well as consistent materials and craft methods. Archaeo- metric study using neutron activation analysis (NAA) at the University of Missouri Resear…
Unveiling the distinctive geochemical signature of fine ware through Sr–Nd–Pb isotopes
This study explores the use of three isotopic systematics—Sr, Nd, and Pb— combined together for the first time to trace the origins of ancient pottery. This approach strengthens our ability to relate raw materials to the final products. The materials selected for the analysis are from a well‐documented data set, previously subjected to a thorough mineralogical–petrographic and chemical characterization. Seventeen ceramic specimens represented by …

Petrographic and lead isotope analyses to assess regional variability in Rio Grande Glaze wares from New Mexico
Minero‐petrographic characterization of fine ware from Cales (South Italy)
79 samples of black glazed pottery, Terra sigillata, fine common ware, and production indicators were recovered in the archaeological site of Cales and investigated via a multi‐analytical program (polarized light microscopy, thermal analyses, XRPD, XRF, FESEM, FESEM‐EDS). Among the materials, finds of important production indicators, represented by welded pieces of black glazed pottery and spacers, attest a local production. Polarized light micro…

New Perspectives on Migration into the Tlajinga District of Teotihuacan
The city of Teotihuacan (AD 1-550) was a major multiethnic urban center that attracted migrants from as far away as west Mexico and the Maya region. Past research in the Tlajinga district at Teotihuacan using oxygen isotopes from human remains estimated that nearly 30% of the population of Tlajinga 33, a single apartment compound, were migrants. This study takes a dual-isotope approach (87Sr/86Sr and δ18Op) to reevaluate the proportion of in-migr…

Origin and diet of inhabitants of the Pacific Coast of Southern Mexico during the Classic Period - Sr, C and N isotopes
Sourcing galena from a Middle Woodland habitation site in northeast Mississippi
Galena has been recovered mostly in mortuary contexts – burial mounds, burial caves, and associated mortuary facilities – from Middle Woodland sites in the Southeast. Three small pieces of galena from the Cork site (22OK746) in northeast Mississippi came from midden deposits at a site with no mound or burials. Lead isotope analysis was used to source the samples to the Central Missouri-Tri-State-North Arkansas region. Isotopes provide an excellen…
Pottery Provenance in the Eastern Mediterranean Using Lead Isotopes
The lead isotope composition of 45 sherds of six different pottery wares from the Eastern Mediterranean and dating from the Late Hellenistic – Late Roman period is analysed and compared to data obtained on ceramics and clays from the Eastern Mediterranean. These sherds were previously analysed by neutron activation and the origin and relationship between the wares has been debated in the literature. The results show that lead isotopes support ear…
Coupling lead isotope analysis and petrography to characterize fabrics of storage and trade containers from H ala S ultan Tekke ( C yprus)
Lead isotopes, thin‐ and sherd‐section analyses are coupled on pottery‐vessel fragments excavated from the Late Bronze Age site of H ala S ultan Tekke (south‐east C yprus) and representing fabrics used for the production of storage and trade containers. The fabrics of the sherds are first described according to general macroscopic observations. Based on the different fabrics identified, a petrographic analysis is carried out on thin sections and …
Using Lead Isotopes to Determine Pottery Provenance in Cyprus
This paper presents the lead isotopic composition of potential clay sources for pottery production, collected in the four major geological zones of Cyprus (Troodos Ophiolite, Circum Troodos Sedimentary Succession, Mamonia Terrane, Kyrenia Terrane) and evaluates its usefulness in Cypriote pottery provenance studies. The clay isotopic signatures from the four zones are compared to each other and to the isotopic composition of various utilitarian po…
Quantitative WD‐XRF calibration for small ceramic samples and their source material
A wavelength‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence (WD‐XRF) calibration is developed for small powdered samples (300mg) with the purpose of analyzing ceramic artifacts that might be available only in limited quantity. This is compared to a conventional calibration using a larger sample mass (2g). The comparison of elemental intensities obtained in both calibrations shows that the decrease in analyzed sample mass results in a linear decrease in measured i…
