Two mass grave sites of war prisoners
Background: During 2020, remains of 1927 individuals from two mass grave sites were exhumed. Archival and archaeological data indicated these were remains of Red Army prisoners of war (POW) who died in Nazi camps. Objective: The study objective was to examine the remains on site before their scheduled reburial that same year. Results: Analysis revealed differences: in Zokniai site, only 30.9% of individuals had POW ID tags, and 3.4% had Red Army …
Lost & found
The article presents the collection of skulls, which was previously believed to be lost, amassed by the renowned Lithuanian physician, anatomist, and anthropologist Jurgis Žilinskas (1885-1957) between the two World Wars. The latter currently comprises 361 skulls, representing 30.4% of the former anthropological collection. The most significant discovery within this collection is the presence of three dated skulls from the Early Mesolithic period…
Differential sampling for genetic analyses of Treponema pallidum and for radiocarbon dating in archaeological bone
OBJECTIVE: Molecular recovery of T. pallidum DNA in dry bone poses methodological challenges. Here we evaluate recovery success from a molecularly confirmed co-infection with yaws (T. pallidum pertenue) and plague (Y. pestis). MATERIALS: Pulverised bone from three pathological anatomical elements from individual AGU007 excavated from Aguonų street, Vilnius, Lithuania was used for DNA analysis. Three additional anatomical elements from individual …
Millennia of Mitochondrial Change
Background: A comprehensive temporal analysis of mtDNA haplogroup variation across Lithuanian history remains limited. This study investigates the mtDNA variation landscape during the Iron Age by comparing newly reported Iron Age individual mtDNA data with the new data from present-day Lithuanians. Methods: Remains of individuals from the Iron Age Lithuania (n = 101) were processed using standard protocols for ancient DNA processing. For the pres…
Aortic paleopathology
This report investigates a probable aortic aneurysm in a skeleton from Kedainiai, Lithuania, assessing cardiovascular signs within a sample of 22 adults. Notably, sternal bone changes indicative of chronic aneurysmal pressure were observed. The remains, identified as those of a middle-aged adult male (ca. 50 years old), exhibited an oval-shaped perforation and surrounding erosion and remodeling on the sternal body, consistent with chronic pressur…
Human diet in Lithuania during the Late Roman and Migration periods ( ca. 200–700 AD) based on stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data
In this study, 71 human individuals were subjected to stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope analysis of bone collagen samples for the purpose of determining human dietary patterns in Lithuania during the Late Roman and Migration periods. More specifically, based on the isotopic data, the aim was to determine and evaluate any potential dietary differences between individuals on the basis of their sex, age, social status and place of res…

Baltic Migrants in the Middle Dnipro Region
THE LATE VIKING-AGE CEMETERY OF OSTRIV, located approximately 80 km south of Kyiv in the region along the Ros’ River, was discovered by the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine team in 2017. By 2020, 67 inhumation graves had been excavated in an area of 1400 sq m. Most of the artefacts from Ostriv are uncommon in Ukraine, but frequently found in the East Baltic region. This suggests a complex multi-ethnic popula…
Human Diet During the Stone Age and Early Metal Period (7000–1 Cal Bc) in Lithuania
In this study we present new carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N) stable isotope data of human (n=13) and animal (n=40) bone and/or dentine collagen samples, alongside accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) dates of human remains (n=16). The studied material was sampled from Lithuanian sites dating from the Late Mesolithic to the pre-Roman Iron Age. For the first time, we present δ 13 C and δ 15 N data from Lithuanian freshwater fi…
Strontium isotope analysis reveals prehistoric mobility patterns in the southeastern Baltic area
A bioarchaeological approach for the examination of two Lithuanian clergymen
In the summer of 2019, members of the Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University were summoned by the diocese of Telšiai to carry out an investigation of the mortal remains of Juozapas Arnulfas Giedraitis and Simonas Mykolas Giedraitis, two high religious dignitaries entombed in the crypt of the parish of St Peter and St Paul, Apostles, at Varniai (Samogitia, Lithuania). The aim of the study was to confirm their identity, to obtain data for compil…
The Human Osteological Collection of Vilnius University
This article briefly presents the history of the human osteological collection stored at the Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University. The birth of such collection can be traced back to the mid-19th century (1855) with the establishment of the Museum of Antiquities. Until the mid-20th century, human skeletal remains were gathered sporadically and selectively, by collecting either skulls or long bones. Since the late 20th century, the policy of s…
The Large-Scale Rescue Excavation of a Multi-Period Site at Kvietiniai Sheds Light on the so far Little Explored Bronze Age in Western Lithuania
The article presents the results of investigations at Kvietiniai archaeological site. Large-scale excavations carried out as part of the implementation of an infrastructure development project have provided very important new data on prehistoric settlement in western Lithuania. The excavations revealed a multi-period archaeological site that contains traces of activity spanning from the Mesolithic to the Early Iron Age. Significant data have been…
Isotopic dietary patterns of monks
Diet patterns in medieval to early modern (14th-early 20th c.) coastal communities in Lithuania
N values were significantly higher than adult ones, indicating that those children were breastfed for an extended period. Meanwhile, Palanga and Kretinga samples had isotope values suggesting a high reliance on terrestrial resources and a peasant type of diet.
Hidden, Unwanted or Simply Forgotten? A Bioarchaeological Profile of the Subačius Street 41 Population
In 2014–2015, an unknown 16th–17th-century cemetery was discovered at the Subačius Street 41 plot in Vilnius. The uncovered human remains are considered to be one of the most abundant and best-preserved anthropological material in the territory of present-day Vilnius. Paradoxically, historical sources do not mention this burial site, although the abundance of the interred individuals does not imply an accidental burial, but perhaps a functioning …

Špitolių istorijos atspindžiai Rakaučiznos (Ukmergės r.) senkapio tyrimų duomenimis
Straipsnyje pristatomi naujausi tarpdalykiniai Rakaučiznos senkapio istorijos tyrimai. Šio paminklo archeologinių kasinėjimų metu sukauptos informacijos ir palaikų antropologinės analizės rezultatų gretinimas su istoriniais šaltiniais leidžia naujai pažvelgti į XVII a. Skeletal pathological conditions of Lithuanian mummies
This report examines the bone lesions found during CT investigations of mummies from the Dominican Church of the Holy Spirit in Vilnius, Lithuania. Observed pathological conditions include a single fracture, osteoarthritis, malpositions and dental disease, as well as some normal variants of the human skeleton. These palaeopathological data provide a clearer picture of the mummies’ osteobiographies, and serve as a reminder about the importance of …
