Positioned at Extremes
Immigrant students who attend US colleges are disproportionately employed in either large firms — especially multinationals — or small firms and self-employment. We study the prevalence and traits of global collaborative patents for U.S. public companies, where the inventor team is located both within and outside of the United States. Collaborative patents are frequently observed when a corporation is entering into a new foreign region for innovative work, especially in settings where intellectual property protection is weak. Weathering the Great Recession
This paper finds that U.S. employment changed differently relative to output in the Great Recession and recovery than in most other advanced countries or in the United States in earlier recessions. Instead of hoarding labor, U.S. firms reduced employment proportionately more than output in the Great Recession, with establishments that survived the downturn contracting jobs massively. U.S. federal and state family leave legislation requires employers to provide job‐protected parental leave for new mothers covered under the legislation.
