Durbi Takusheyi is a burial site composed of at least eight mounds located between the modern towns of Katsina and Daura in northern Nigeria. Parts of the mounds were first excavated in 1907 by Herbert Richmond Palmer in cooperation with the Emir of Katsina and later again in 1992 in the course of a German research project under the lead of Dierk Lange, Bayreuth. After the 1992 excavation, the retained blocks were stored in the Jos Museum, Nigeri…

    Open Access•Gerhard Liesegang•ARTICLE•History in Africa•2001•Referências: 4

In the beginning of 1999 Professor David Beach died in Harare, only about three months after an unexpected illness which proved to be brain cancer had cut short his academic activities. His early death after more than thirty years of intensive research on the precolonial history of Zimbabwe and Mozambique motivated some of his friends and colleagues to plan a panel on his work in the 2000 CAAS conference in Edmonton, Canada. This paper was origin…

In the 1890s, when the administrative capital of Moz…

  • New Light on Venda Traditions

    Open Access•Gerhard Liesegang•ARTICLE•History in Africa•1977•Citada por: 4•Referências: 3

In the early eighteenth century a Venda kingdom stretched from the Limpopo in the north to the Olifants or even Ngwenya (Crocodile) in the south and included the much smaller area now inhabited by the Venda. The main evidence for the existence of this polity comes from data on the Venda gathered between 1723 and 1730 by the Dutch at Delagoa Bay. The most substantial of these sources, part of which has been transcribed and translated here, is the …

  • Some Iron Age Wares from Central Tanzania

    Gerhard Liesegang•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•1975•Citada por: 6•Referências: 5

The paper describes pottery from several sites in two geographically distinct areas of Tanzania: Irangi on the escarpment near the western edge of the Masai Steppe and Isanzu in Singida Region. In Irangi two major wares were distinguished: Haubi ware which is probably associated with a ‘burnt brick’ site and which is decorated in a ‘dotted wavy line’ technique; and Kandaga ware which was found in and near a rock-shelter and is decorated with deep…

  • Dingane's attack on Lourenço Marques in 1833

    Open Access•Gerhard Liesegang•ARTICLE•The Journal of African History•1969•Citada por: 10•Referências: 4

The reasons for Dingane's attack on Lourenço Marques in 1833 may have been ( a ) the policy of expansion pursued by governor Ribeiro, which Machakane of Matola and perhaps Dingane himself may have tried to check, ( b ) lack of caution in treating Dingane, ( c ) perhaps also inability to meet Dingane's demands (this may have been due to economic difficulties after the partial breakdown of the slave trade in 1830), ( d ) the fact that Ribeiro proba…
