  • No Occupation

    Open Access•Eduardo Cadava•ARTICLE•Derrida Today•2025

Taking its point of departure from a thread of references to Palestine in Derrida's writings, from Glas to his last texts, this essay seeks to demonstrate that these writings can be a resource for us as we navigate our way through the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It traces Derrida's complicated relation to his own Jewishness and argues that it is this complexity that enables him to guide us through the thicket of the present war in Gaza.…

  • Marx ante (y antes) de la literatura

    Open Access•Eduardo Cadava•ARTICLE•Acta Poética•2009

    Open Access•Eduardo Cadava•ARTICLE•Acta Poética•2007

The disaster ruins everything, all the while leaving everything intact. It does not touch anyone in particular; am not threatened by it, but spared, left aside. It is in this way that I am threatened; it is in this way that the disaster threatens in me what is exterior to me-an other than I who passively become other. There is no reaching the disaster. Out of reach is he whom it threatens, whetherfrom afar or close up, it is impossible to say: th…

There are certain things that force your hand. You find yourself incontrovertibly obligated: something occurs prior to owing, and more fundamental still than that of which any trace of empirical guilt can give an account. This relation-to whom? to what?-is no more and no less than your liabilitywhat you owe before you think, understand, or give; that is, what you owe from the very fact that you exist, before you can properly owe. You do not have …

  • Words of Light

    Eduardo Cadava•ARTICLE•diacritics•1992

This text demonstrates that Walter Benjamin articulates his conception of history through the language of photography. Focusing on Benjamin's discussions of the flashes and images of history, it argues that the questions raised by this link between photography and history touch on issues that belong to the entire trajectory of Benjamin's writings: the historical and political consequences of technology, the relation between reproduction and mimes…
