Sidi Zin Archaeological Project
The Sidi Zin Archaeological Project aims to bridge understanding of the Acheulean-Middle Stone Age transition in northern Tunisia, a relatively understudied region in the context of hominin evolution. The Sidi Zin locality will provide chronological, palaeoenvironmental, geomorphological and cultural insights into Acheulean and Middle Stone Age occupations in Tunisia
Middle and Late Holocene vegetation history of the Murcia region from a new high-resolution pollen sequence from the Mar Menor lagoon
Multi-proxy Archaeobotanical Analysis from Mesolithic and Early Neolithic Sites in South-west Ukraine
This paper presents the results of archaeobotanical studies carried out on the Late Mesolithic layer at Melnychna-Krucha (6460–6100 cal BC) and the Linearbandkeramik (LBK) site of Kamyane-Zavallia (5295–4960 cal BC), close to the Southern Bug River. Despite the relatively modest dataset presented in this paper, these preliminary results provide new data for a region where the environmental setting and the uses of plant resources during the Early …
Grotta Reali, the first multilayered mousterian evidences in the Upper Volturno Basin (Rocchetta a Volturno, Molise, Italy)
Extending the applicability of the Reveals model for pollen-based vegetation reconstructions to coastal lagoons
Quantitative reconstruction of past plant abundance from fossil pollen data is still a challenging task for palynologists. During the last decades, mechanistic methods have been developed to convert pollen assemblages from peat and lake deposits into vegetation abundance at regional and local scale. Coastal areas are particularly sensitive to climate and environmental hazards. Thus, quantitative estimates of past vegetation are important to bette…
Tracing Fire in Early European Prehistory
Linking environmental changes with human occupations between 900 and 400 ka in Western Europe
Étude des macro-, méso- et micro-charbons du site épigravettien de Mezhyrich (Ukraine)
First results of archaeobotanical analysis from Neolithic layers of Buran Kaya IV (Crimea, Ukraine)
This paper contributes to understand the palaeoenvironment and the exploitation of vegetal resources during the Mid-Holocene in the southern Crimean Mountains. To address these questions, we apply a multi-proxy approach based on charcoal, seeds/fruits and phytoliths analyses from Neolithic layers (5800–5300 cal BC) of Buran-Kaya IV, a rock-shelter located in the south of Crimean Peninsula. Charcoal analysis shows that the Neolithic groups have ex…

Palaeolandscapes of Southern Apennines during the late Early and the Middle Pleistocene
Hominin responses to environmental changes during the Middle Pleistocene in Central and Southern Italy
The palaeobotanical record of early Palaeolithic sites from Western Europe indicates that hominins settled in different kinds of environments. During the "Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT)", from about 1 to 0.6 Ma, the transition from 41-ka to 100-ka dominant climatic oscillations, occurring within a long-term cooling trend, was associated with an aridity crisis which strongly modified the ecosystems. Starting from the MPT the more favorable clima…
Charcoal scarcity in Epigravettian settlements with mammoth bone dwellings
