  • Spatial Distributions of Isotope Ratios in Tap Water, Hair, and Teeth from Latin America for Region-of- Origin Predictions of Unidentified Border Crossers

Saskia Ammer, Eric J Bartelink et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2025

In this article, we present and summarize reference stable isotope data useful in the identification efforts of deceased undocumented border crossers (UBCs) found in southern Arizona and South Texas. In addition, we discuss the use of reference baseline data to refine predictions of region-of-origin of unidentified UBC remains. Overall, Mexican reference hair samples reflect significant consumption of C4 resources, indicating a diet dominated by …

  • Comparing Genetic Variation among Latin American Immigrants

Briana T New, New New et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2021•Citada por: 1

The humanitarian crisis on the US-Mexico border is a long-standing and evolving crisis in which nearly 8,000 deaths have been reported in the last two decades. These deaths are largely distributed across the Arizona-Mexico and Texas-Mexico border regions, where demographic trends for immigrants attempting to cross into the United States have shifted dramatically. The demographic change and volume of immigrants seeking shelter in the United States…

  • Investigation of factors controlling PM2.5 variability across the South Korean Peninsula during Korus-AQ

    Open Access•Carolyn E Jordan, J H Crawford et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2020

The Korea – United States Air Quality Study (May – June 2016) deployed instrumented aircraft and ground-based measurements to elucidate causes of poor air quality related to high ozone and aerosol concentrations in South Korea. This work synthesizes data pertaining to aerosols (specifically, particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters <2.5 micrometers, PM2.5) and conditions leading to violations of South Korean air quality standards (24-hr mean…

  • Temporal, Geographic and Identification Trends in Craniometric Estimates of Ancestry for Persons of Latin American Origin

    Bridget F B Algee‐hewitt, Bridget F B Algee-Hewitt et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2018•Citada por: 1

Recent genotypic analyses of U.S.-Mexico border-crossing fatalities reveal greater indigenous ancestry in individuals who are currently unidentified and have been recovered in more recent years-called an "identification bias" in the forensic case analysis of Hispanics of Mexican origin. Given the implications of these findings for the human identification process, this study uses craniometrics to validate these genotypic results. We test if the d…

  • Temporal Patterns of Mexican Migrant Genetic Ancestry

    Open Access•Cris E Hughes, Bridget F B Algee‐hewitt et al.•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2017•Citada por: 16•Referências: 45

Motivated by the humanitarian crisis along the US-Mexico border and the need for more integrative approaches to migrant death investigations, we employ both biological and cultural anthropology perspectives to provide insight into these deaths and the forensic identification process. We propose that structural vulnerabilities linked to ethnicity impact the success of identifying deceased migrants. Using forensic genetic data, we examine the relat…

Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have a long-standing history of engaging the African-American community. In most instances, these institutions are located in predominantly African-American communities. This article intends to offer a discussion of a pedagogical approach used at an HBCU, located in a large mid-Atlantic city. The purpose of this macro-assignment was an effort designed to prepare BSW students for macro-practice …

  • Cranial morphological variation among contemporary Mexicans

    Open Access•Cris E Hughes, Meredith L Tise et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2013•Citada por: 5•Referências: 35

Genetic research has documented geographical variation within Mexico that corresponds to trends in ancestry admixture from postcolonial times on. The purpose of this study is to determine whether craniometric variation among contemporary Mexicans is comparable to that reported in genetic studies. Standard osteometric measurements were taken on 82 male crania derived from forensic cases, with geographic origins of the specimens spanning over two‐t…
