  • Value‐Added in African Exports and Rules of Origin

Open Access•Rohit Ticku, Marco Sanfilippo et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2025

Rules of origin (ROO) are criteria determining when goods are eligible for trade preferences. A common feature of ROO is to require that products embody a minimum share of value originating in the exporting country or group of beneficiary countries. Using disaggregated trade data, we estimate the levels of restrictiveness of ROO that maximise the domestic or regional value‐added embedded in African preferential exports. We uncover significant het…

  • Child labour and global value chains

Open Access•Cristian Ugarte, Marcelo Olarreaga et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2023

We explore the relationship between the internationalisation of production through Global Value Chains and child labour at the sector level, using data from 26 low‐ and middle‐income countries. We find that sectors with stronger participation in foreign markets by exporting inputs to firms that will process them and export them to third countries (forward linkages) exhibit less child labour. However, other forms of participation in foreign market…

  • Introduction to symposium supply chain trade in Africa

    Open Access•Jaime De Melo, Marcelo Olarreaga•ARTICLE•World Economy•2023

The symposium focuses on the evolution and determinants of Africa's participation in Global Value Chains (GVC) through comparisons with other continents, but also across countries within Africa. Using firm, sector and country‐level data they provide a comprehensive micro and macroeconomic analysis of GVC in Africa that helps inform policymakers aiming at increasing Africa's participation in GVC. Three policy areas are identified. First, encouragi…

  • Cooperation in WTO’s Tariff Waters

Alessandro Nicita, Marcelo Olarreaga et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2018•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

This paper examines the extent to which tariff cooperation is observed among World Trade Organization members. With the help of a simple political economy model, we show that tariffs are positively correlated with the importer's market power when they are set noncooperatively but negatively correlated when set cooperatively. We use this prediction to empirically identify the extent of cooperation in the WTO and find that more than three-quarters …

  • Labor Adjustment Costs across Sectors and Regions

Marcio Cruz, Emmanuel Milet et al.•BOOK•2017

This paper estimates the mobility costs of workers across sectors and regions in a large sample of developing countries. The paper develops a new methodology that uses cross-sectional data only. This is motivated by the fact that panel data typically are not available for most developing countries. The results suggest that, on average, sector mobility costs are higher than regional mobility costs. The costs of moving across sectors and regions ar…

  • Online Exports and the Wage Gap

Marcio Cruz, Emmanuel Milet et al.•BOOK•2017

The development of the Internet is often seen as a source of demand for skilled workers and therefore a potential driver of the wage gap between skilled and unskilled workers. This paper focuses on the impact that international trade in online platforms has on the wage gap. Because online trade allows smaller firms with relatively more unskilled workers to access world markets it can be expected a priori that an expansion of online exports reduce…

  • Export promotion and firm entry into and survival in export markets

Daniel Lederman, Marcelo Olarreaga et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Development…•2016•Citada por: 2•Referências: 16

Surveys of export promotion agencies suggest that that they tend to focus on helping firms become exporters as a means to stimulate aggregate export growth, but the existing empirical evidence has paid little attention to the role of export promotion agencies in helping entry into exporting. This paper fills this gap with a panel of exporting and nonexporting firms from seven Latin American countries during the period 2006–2010. The results sugge…

  • There Goes Gravity

    Open Access•Andreas Lendle, Marcelo Olarreaga et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2016•Citada por: 9•Referências: 31

We compare the effect of geographic distance on eBay and total international trade flows. We consider the same 61 countries and basket of goods for both types of transactions. We find the effect of distance to be on average 65% smaller on eBay. We argue this difference is due to a reduction in search costs; it increases with product differentiation and is higher when trade partners speak different languages, when corruption in the exporting count…

  • Estimating Trade Restrictiveness Indices

Open Access•Hiau Looi Kee, Alessandro Nicita et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2009•Citada por: 30•Referências: 19

The objective of this paper is to provide indicators of trade restrictiveness that include both measures of tariff and nontariff barriers for 91 developing and industrial countries. For each country, the authors estimate three trade restrictiveness indices. The first one summarizes the degree of trade distortions that each country imposes on itself through its own trade policies. The second one focuses on the trade distortions imposed by each cou…

  • What Governments Maximize and Why

    Open Access•Kishore Gawande, Pravin Krishna et al.•ARTICLE•International Organization•2009•Citada por: 9•Referências: 41

Policymaking power enables governments to redistribute income to powerful interests in society. However, some governments exhibit greater concern for aggregate welfare than others. This government behavior may itself be endogenously determined by a number of economic, political, and institutional factors. Trade policy, being fundamentally redistributive, provides a valuable context in which the welfare-mindedness of governments may be empirically…

  • Import Demand Elasticities and Trade Distortions

Hiau Looi Kee, Alessandro Nicita et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2008

This paper provides a systematic estimation of import demand elasticities for a broad group of countries at a very disaggregated level of product detail. We use a semiflexible translog GDP function approach to formally derive import demands and their elasticities, which are estimated with data on prices and endowments. Within a theoretically consistent framework, we use the estimated elasticities to construct Feenstra's (1995) simplification of A…
