Saudi Arabia in the Oil Era
Saudi Arabia
This much-revised edition of Professor Abir's Saudi Arabia in the Oil Era now includes consideration of both Gulf Wars. Abir examines the social and political forces that have shaped Saudi Arabia, including the impact of Islam and of Westernization, drawing heavily on Saudi sources. There is also essential analysis of regional security dilemmas and of the country's prospects in the post-Gulf War era.
Ethiopia and the Red Sea
First Published in 1980. An important waterway for international trade, the Red Sea is about 2000 kms. long and generally between 200-300 kms. wide. In its southern part the Arabian peninsula approaches the Horn of Africa to a distance of about 25 kms. The great majority of the Arabians townspeople as well as rural nomads and agriculturalists lived at subsistence level and could be regarded as 'lower class'. The unificat…

Relations between the Government of India and the Sharif of Mecca during the French Invasion of Egypt, 1798–1801
The Hijaz, being only a little less sterile than most of the Arabian peninsula, could in the 18th century support its nomadic inhabitants and urban communities owing to two important assets, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, the Ḥajj , and the transit trade from the south of Arabia to the north
The Emergence and Consolidation of the Monarchies of Enarea and Jimma in the First Half of the Nineteenth Century
In most of Ethiopia the Galla preserved, to a great extent, their ‘democratic’ traditional social and political institutions until the twentieth century. However, in the second quarter of the nineteenth century, one hears of five Galla centralized despotic monarchies in southwestern Ethiopia. It seems that this was the culmination of a long process by which the authority of the traditional officeholders among the Macha Galla was gradually strengt…
