From plate to place
Taking an inductive approach, this paper explores a key question with respect to tourists’ meaning creation: What is the role of servicescapes in the development of place meanings for tourists? The research is situated in place and appropriation theory and leverages a large two-phase qualitative study on tourists’ restaurant experiences in Brittany, an important tourism destination in the North-West of France. Analysis of the narrative data uncov…
Royalty
The term “royalty” connotes people who either occupy the role of monarchs in society, or who are related to these figures by blood or marriage. Although many royal houses around the world occupy a symbolic/ceremonial rather than a political role, royalty and the “human brands” royal families contain remain important sources of aspirational and conspicuous consumption. In this essay, we focus on how the British Royal Family Brand (BRFB; Otnes, Cel…
Gender, sexuality and consumption
Marketers have long been aware that what we consume shapes our sense of who we are, and that a person&s;s gender and sexuality associations comprise important parts of this identification. This chapter discusses the evolution of work on gender within consumer research, by focusing on two time periods, pre 1990s and post 1990s, and specifically on how feminist perspectives shape the scholarship. It explores two emerging research areas influencing …

Consumption Rituals
Consumption rituals can be defined as holidays, special occasions, and other sacred events characterized by the intensive (and sometimes excessive) consumption of goods, services, and experiences. At such events, individuals engage in both consumption and other behaviors with actions that can be characterized as formal, serious, and intense (Rook 1985). Consumption rituals are distinct from other, more mundane types of consumption‐laden activitie…
Pursuing Parenthood
This article argues that a fuller understanding of consumer persistence, or repeated attempts to achieve goals, is necessary and can be achieved by adopting an interdisciplinary perspective and integrating cultural and cognitive perspectives on consumer phenomena. Developing insights by examining experiences of informants pursuing parenthood using assisted reproductive technologies, we build on Bagozzi and Dholakia's (1999) model of goal striving…

Social Influences on Dyadic Giving over Time
Most gift-giving research focuses on how aspects of the giver, recipient, or their relationship impact gift exchange. This longitudinal study of the Christmas giving of five informants demonstrates that givers strategically incorporate, or allow themselves to be influenced by, third parties when selecting gifts for recipients. Moreover, givers' motivations for incorporating these influences can change over time. Thus, seemingly personal gifts to …

Making Magic Consumption
Recourse to magic is a universal strategy for trying to resolve intractable social problems. Within the context of white-water river rafting, the authors illustrate the conjunction of elements (condition of the performer, rite, and formula) that make magical experience possible in a constructed consumption setting. They show how "river magic," like all magic, concerns itself with the relationship between humans and the world, how it activates cer…
Gift Receipt and the Reformulation of Interpersonal Relationships
Sherry (1983) defines reformulation as the final stage of gift exchange, during which a newly presented gift can impact the relationship between giver and recipient. To date no one has examined exactly how gifts can affect relationships or what aspects of gift exchange contribute to realignment of the giver/recipient relationship. Using depth interviews and critical-incident surveys, our study explores how the recipient's perceptions of the exist…
Toward an Understanding of Consumer Ambivalence
A case study of wedding planning is used to explore the concept of consumer ambivalence. Focus groups, in-depth interviews, and shopping trips were employed to generate text. A formal definition of consumer ambivalence is provided. Our analysis revealed four antecedents of consumer ambivalence: expectation versus reality, overload, role conflict with purchase influencers, and custom and value conflict. These antecedents were then linked to partic…

Gift Selection for Easy and Difficult Recipients
Using interpretive techniques, we explore the meaning underlying Christmas shoppers' description of some recipients as “easy” or “difficult,” in terms of gift selection. We argue that recipients are described as such because they either help or hinder givers' attempts to express specific social roles through exchange. We identify six such roles that givers express alone or in combination to each recipient on their gift lists. These are the please…
