Handbook on Inequality and the Environment
This innovative Handbook provides a comprehensive treatment of the complex relationship between inequality and the environment and illustrates the myriad ways in which they intersect. Enhancing school capacity to adopt school behavioural health best practices
Comprehensive school behavioural health best practices are widely disseminated. How to build schools’ capacity to implement these interventions is not well understood. This study explored how a coordinated set of capacity‐building strategies (e.g., individualized technical assistance [TA], community of practice [CoP]) facilitated the adoption of school behavioural health best practices. A multiple‐case study design was used to examine the relatio…

Child Welfare Information Gateway, with funding from the Children’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, conducted the National Child Welfare Information Study between January and May 2019 to better understand how child welfare professionals search for, access, and share information. Topics covered in the survey included the general level of access to child welfare information, proactive searches for child welfare informati…
Finding the ‘Epic of Jangar
During the early reform period in China beginning in 1978, intellectuals and government agencies expended significant resources collecting, ‘revising’, and publishing folk literature in collaboration with local folk artists and amateur collectors. While folk artists were encouraged to re-engage with past folk practices, academics were required to analyze and preserve this ‘folk culture’ ‘scientifically’, ‘objectively’, and ‘correctly’. This paper…
Community‐Based System Dynamics for Mobilizing Communities to Advance School Health
BACKGROUND: Frameworks such as the WSCC model provide evidence-based guidance for addressing school health at the school, district, and regional level. However, frameworks do not implement themselves; they require the mobilization and collaboration of stakeholders within communities and an understanding of the unique resources and barriers within each context. Furthermore, addressing school health presents a complex systems problem. METHODS: Comm…
Optimal input for language learning
Discussions of optimal types of spoken and written input for language learning have traditionally focused on the relative merits of authentic and linguistically simplified spoken and written texts. I will argue that elaborated input and, in particular, modified elaborated input, constitute better options, with tasks, not just texts, functioning as important input sources. Modified elaborated input, potentially coupled with bimodal presentation, h…
Collaboration, confrontation, and controversy
This paper examines the history of the restoration, or more accurately, reconstruction of Bagrati Cathedral in western Georgia. Constructed in 1003, Bagrati Cathedral is an important cultural monument in the political and architectural history of Georgia. Destroyed by an explosion in 1691, the cathedral was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1994 in its ruined state. However, the Georgian government under President Mikheil Saakashvili a…
First Person Singular
After completing a law degree at the University of Birmingham when I was 20 and not really knowing what I wanted to do, except that it was not law, I became an English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher accidentally through signing up as a volunteer with the British United Nations Association (BUNA), roughly equivalent to the US Peace Corps. Instead of being dispatched to assist starving people through a remote third-world community development …

Government Financial Assistance for Australian University Students
Governments in Australia play an important role in the provision of education at all levels. This paper reviews the assistance provided by governments to students in Australian universities. The Relationship Between Resource Constraints and Physician Problem Solving
OBJECTIVES: Research suggests that physicians will engage in more vigilant problem-solving under conditions of resource constraints than under conditions of resource slack. Increased vigilance related to physicians' clinical strategies enhances care by disposing physicians toward more optimal care choices. The authors examine whether pressures for clinical resource constraints encourage increased and sustained vigilance in problem-solving among c…
The Impact of Diagnosis Related Group Profitability on the Skimming and Dumping of Psychiatric Diagnosis Related Groups
Psychiatric DRGs are identified in terms of their relative profitability within each hospital of a 386 hospital cohort. It is then determined whether hospitals admitted more of the more profitable and fewer of the less profitable patients over the period 1983-1987 (skimming). Also determined is whether hospitals discharged more of the less profitable to other short term hospitals over that same period of time (dumping). The findings generally ind…
Hindess and the Critique of Social Phenomenology
This paper examines the contention that the writings of Alfred Schutz are not phenomenological. In particular, the indices of discontinuity between Schutz and Husserl previously expounded by Barry Hindess are considered. The article concludes that rather than being a Weberian working with a phenomenological gloss, Schutz is in fact a phenomenologist working with a Weberian gloss. It is further held that the difficulties associated with Schutz's p…
